For those interested in the Hubitat C-7, there is a seller on ebay that has them for $20 (OBO) plus $10 shipping for new (Other). I don't think SD allows ebay links, but it is the first result when I searched showing 900+ sold so far.

I have a c7 that works well for me and was going to post this same deal from the smartest house, but saw the better deal on ebay.
If you're considering home assistant, I would just go home assistant. You don't need one of these hubs to do that you just need a Z-Wave dongle, which they also sell. I would not install it on a pi though unless you already have it. Buy used a micro PC off eBay like a Lenovo tiny.
The 800 series z-wave range extender which also reports power outages for $22.95 is an awesome deal! I bought several products from the smartest home and have always been happy with them. I will say that one time I wrote a review critical of a device and instead of posting it they sent me an email saying that they would have their tech support work with me but it wasn't a technical issue, it was just a poorly designed product. I still trust them for buying stuff though.

We have lots of zooz stuff, but I absolutely love the remote switches. Our new house has some weird lighting things that they've quickly allowed us to work around

Does anyone have expertise as to this vs Home Assistant running on a Pi? I think this involves less setup, programming, trial/error, but I'm wondering if a device like this still has a use if one eventually decides to go the Home Assistant route? For example, with HA, do you still need a hub like this to interface with some devices?

My previous research had me trending toward trying HA, but... I'm thinking of picking up one of these as option value for that *someday* when I have time to reassess/expand my minimal automation setup. Classic SD pathology, I know...

I believe I found this listing. It is $20 indeed, plus $10.00 shipping . However, this is advertised as OPEN BOX, which means the devices were already used, most likely registered. It is unclear HUBITAT provide the warranty service . So, no risk, no fun ! Smilie I don't buy anything on eBay anymore since I purchased Fibaro hub and was unable to register it cause reported as stolen.

Home assistant rocks, but be aware that it writes to disk a lot. If you install it on a Pi's micro SD card, you will eventually lose the card due to excessive writes.

In general, hubs like Hubitat and Zooz Box (there are a few others) are the middle ground between Google Home/Alexa and HA. GH/A is late to the game with local control and are a bit more limited on integration (plus focus heavily on wifi devices, blah). They also allow Amazon/Alphabet to see what you're up to and you're subject to their whims. (Google has made my nest thermostats worse over time.) However, they're super easy to set up. HA gives you the most control...which means you also have to know the most about what you're doing or you can screw it all up. And, as you're aware, you have to provide the box. As others said, you can start HA on Rpi but eventually migrate to something that has a real disk/ssd.

How does it report power outages? Does it have a built in battery? And I assume you need battery backup on your hub and Internet hardware too?

Power outage on the individual outlet. It's also known as a failed circuit alarm. I have a deep freeze with a lot of meat in it, so I put this on that same outlet so if that breaker trips the battery in that device can still talk to the Smart hub so it can notify you. To be able to report a power outage of your entire house when you're away you are exactly right, you would need a UPS on your internet modem, your router, and whatever Smart hub you use for that to work. In my case, it works :-)

If you go Home Assistant (which is recommended), you would not need the Hubitat C7 hub.
You would however need an z-wave USB stick (for the z-wave radio/antenna) to plug into the metal box where you install HA, and turn the HA box into your z-wave hub.

Smartest House website does sell those USB stick from Zooz.

Given the price tag of the Pi these days (plus storage and fan and case and power), you (could but) likely would not want to run HA on a Pi. Thin clients, SFF PCs, headless laptops, NAS, can all do virtual machines these days, and that's probably where you want to go.

For someone who would like to enter the field of private home automation :-)
Does those devices uses your regular WiFi network to communicate with the Hub (like Habitat). It seems you need to connect Habitat by Ethernet (the same HA Green) so I believe hubs don't have WiFi module built-in and smart devices need to be set up though the local network to communicate with the device.

You use your regular internet to communicate with the hub, but the hub communicates with the devices via z-wave. All your smart devices do not connect to your internet.

The hubitat C-8 does have the ability to connect to the internet via wifi (and ethernet)

Welcome to the rabbit hole of home automation. The devices in this sale are Z-wave, which is a wireless protocol that is similar to wifi but works on a different frequency. It has other advantages (ex: power draw) that make it useful for home automation. The hub boxes -- Hubitat and Zooz box -- in this sale have Zwave and Zigbee (another HA wireless protocol) radios, so it can communicate with devices of each type. The hub also has wifi and ethernet so that you can connect it to the internet (ie for mobile access and updates). Wired connections are preferable because they're more stable, but you can use WiFi. However, the hubs don't work too well with wifi "smart" devices.

So the idea is devices <- zigbee/zwave -> hub <- wifi/ethernet -> internet access.

But when the rules are running (ie light switch pressed twice so the whole room goes on max brightness), they're only accessing the left side of that map, what is called "local control." If your internet goes down, your house will still work. This isn't the case for certain other home hubs, like Google Home. (I believe SmartThings and Alexa have limited local control. I don't use this systems, so I'm less familiar.)

That listing is by purifilabs who was going to use the habitat with a custom OS as the central hub for their system. They bought a lot of the C7 devices before pivoting to another solution and are offloading all the devices they bought. I understand they were never used and may have only been flashed with their custom OS at one point.

I bought several of the C7 hubs from them a while back and they look and act like brand new units, so I wouldn't be concerned.
