My previous research had me trending toward trying HA, but... I'm thinking of picking up one of these as option value for that *someday* when I have time to reassess/expand my minimal automation setup. Classic SD pathology, I know...

You would however need an z-wave USB stick (for the z-wave radio/antenna) to plug into the metal box where you install HA, and turn the HA box into your z-wave hub.
Smartest House website does sell those USB stick from Zooz.
Given the price tag of the Pi these days (plus storage and fan and case and power), you (could but) likely would not want to run HA on a Pi. Thin clients, SFF PCs, headless laptops, NAS, can all do virtual machines these days, and that's probably where you want to go.
Does those devices uses your regular WiFi network to communicate with the Hub (like Habitat). It seems you need to connect Habitat by Ethernet (the same HA Green) so I believe hubs don't have WiFi module built-in and smart devices need to be set up though the local network to communicate with the device.

The hubitat C-8 does have the ability to connect to the internet via wifi (and ethernet)

So the idea is devices <- zigbee/zwave -> hub <- wifi/ethernet -> internet access.
But when the rules are running (ie light switch pressed twice so the whole room goes on max brightness), they're only accessing the left side of that map, what is called "local control." If your internet goes down, your house will still work. This isn't the case for certain other home hubs, like Google Home. (I believe SmartThings and Alexa have limited local control. I don't use this systems, so I'm less familiar.)

I bought several of the C7 hubs from them a while back and they look and act like brand new units, so I wouldn't be concerned.
