Just speculation but there is probably a good reason Apple went M4 in the iPads. Likely on device GenAI will work with m4 only or better and we will probably find out in two weeks… worth the wait IMO

Based on the M4 in ipad, it is mostly geared toward AI, not necessary faster than M3 in normal tasks. So wait if you are into AI, but then you would want M4 pro instead of macbook air

Might be worth considering this vs. the 14" MacBook Pro. For $150 more (on the education store), you get a much nicer screen (mini-LED, 1000 nits vs the MBA's 500, 1600 nits for HDR content), an extra USB-C/TB4 port, an HDMI port, an SD slot, fans for sustained workloads, and slightly better battery life.

You'd be trading off a bit of portability as the MBA is slightly smaller, thinner, and lighter, plus it's $150 more.

Edit: I was reminded that the base M3 MBP starts with 8GB RAM, rather than 16GB. A comparable model with 16GB RAM starts at $1700, and at that point you might as well wait for the M3 Pro model to go on sale.
