I've been keeping an eye on the Universal Wall Connector which supports both NACS and J1772 vehicles with an ingenious built-in connector. It retailed for $595 on launch at the end of last year. It then went up to $620, but just saw it drop to $580 on Amazon:

Small price drop, but better than nothing if you need one now.

Some might ask why get this when there are cheaper alternatives. 2 big reasons:

Powershare: V2H supports powering your house from the car. Currently only the CyberTruck supports this, but other models will follow.
https://www.tesla.com/powershare

Power Management: Multiple wall connectors can dynamically load balance and share the capacity of a single breaker. This is great for multi-car households with limited panel capacity. If one car is connected, it can charge up to the max of 48A. If two are plugged in, they can split it 24A & 24A, or any combination totaling up to 48A.

The marginal added equipment cost is worth it IMHO for some future proofing and to avoid additional labor replacing another unit that doesn't support Powershare.

Just FYI, I think this is the new standard price. Same price as Tesla's website.

The cost to upgrade your house to enable this is apparently extraordinarily expensive -- so no one should be buying this for *that* reason

I'd also caution y'all to read the reviews. It sounds problematic while the regular has glowing review

The "regular" Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector function the same when it comes to charging the car. "Problematic" is a scare-mongering claim.

It does take additional equipment for V2H battery backup. In addition to a a transfer switch, the EVSE (this Universal Wall Connector) must also support V2H. If you don't get it now, you'll have to replace the old EVSE costing $400+, and buy the UWC or one with similar functionality. You're paying $0-200 now to not have to replace it later. Most competitors EVSE in this class (48A) are in the $500-600 range already so it's not even a premium in many cases.

Plus you have compatibility with both J1772 and NACS cars.

IMHO I don't think it's worth it and prices will continue to decline. I have 2 in a box, but I chose to use Emporia instead and didn't even bother connecting the tesla. Emporia is cheaper and can adjust charge according to solar generation with an extra accessory, which tesla doesn't have. Maybe in a few years when tesla chargers actually live up to their claims, which usually happens a few years after their hyped claims. By then, the next generation will be out. Tesla has done this multiple times and this time is no different. Most 48A chargers are sub $500 on sale. No point in paying extra now

And people that actually have 2 EVs know that it sucks to do 'power management'. It costs almost the same to connect them independently and have both charge at 48A instead of 24A. There's no point in that anymore

Most residential homes don't have the panel capacity to charge 2 vehicles at 48A simultaneously (96A total). They need a device to monitor and load balance power. While you could naively set both max to 24A to not exceed the panel, it artificially limits the charge rate when only 1 is charging.

The benefit is dynamic load balancing. If only 1 car charges, it gets the full 48A. If both try to charge at max rate, it splits 24-24. However as 1 car reaches its top end on the charge curve and throttles back, it could split to 36-12 or any combination.

If you're cool with used ones, you can usually get them for under $350 on Ebay.

I have this since I have a j1772 and Tesla. Works awesome. Only issue is for the j1772 I have to plug in…wait like 2 seconds.. then replug and it charges.

I have a 40a breaker and set it to 32a in the initial set up process. Works like a charm and no issues and shows in Tesla app. Not having to deal with the plug adapters is awesome and seamless .

If,you have just a Tesla don't get this , get regular one.

That is simply not true. Yes you'll find non-popular brands for cheaper price, and sometimes some popular brands do go on sale. Also, prices of older models would decrease, as do with all products. As for Tesla, the prices on their EVSE had gone up, not down.

The ability to share one 60Amp breaker saved me a bunch because my panel was full and would not fit another 60 Amp breaker. Bought a 2nd wall charger and split the wire to both chargers and they figure how best to use the 48 amps across 2 cars.

This is what I bought for mine (a dual) and it is not made of glass and it is industrial with a long warranty and made in Canada. Cost much less than 2 Tesla WC. I use it for Tesla and 2 PHEV w/ J-adapters. Nary an issue and a single install. I sold my Tesla but the others use it daily. I have had mine for 4 years, works like a champ and automatically routes power between the whips. Also their CS is A+, good luck talking to a human at Tesla or a response.

I was able to place the 2 chargers in different sides of my garage and I am waiting for the price of the basic wall charger to drop to $350 again to get a 3rd one for the 3rd car but this will be installed outside. Yours looks like a good product for you, but would not have worked for me and 3 cars, way more expensive. Luckily I have no idea about the CS as I have not needed it (which is a better option).

I wasn't suggesting it would work for 6 billion people, but as an alternative to purchasing multiple Tesla WC which is more expensive in todays dollars not some potential cost in the future. I do have experience w/ both Tesla and Grizzle and I can tell you one of the reasons why I no longer have a Tesla is from the subpar CS because I did look at Tesla WC before I went the other way and the lack of help/resources from Tesla was one of the reasons. I was uncomfortable in their process to maintain overcurrent in a fault condition as you are relying upon software and wireless comms between the adapters to all go properly. There are no standards for this, and for why I went w/ a single solution that was a single point to control current flow and routing.
