Spending $1500 on a bike so you don't have to spend $5000 on a crappy car is a solid choice.
ugh i want it without a "Free" battery for 500$ less.
Yes, I have sold and serviced both. If you can afford the Tern, it'll save you time and money in the long run. The Aventons are fine for occasional use, but suffer issues requiring warranty assistance at a rate far above Tern. Aventon customer service is solidly "OK" which is really not something you want to have to think about if this will be a daily driver. Tern, and Bosch (who handle the drive unit), customer service teams are both excellent, though I don't frequently need to use them.

A big difference is that having a bike with a hub drive, and a throttle, like the Aventon will put you squarely in the "ebike" pricing tier for most services at most shops, assuming you find a shop that will work on throttled, or Class 2, bikes. Due to the added time required to do just about everything on a hub drive bike, save for a front flat, you should expect to pay 30-50% more for service. The going rate for a flat tire on a hub-driven ebike in my market is between $55-75 just for labor. A conventional flat fix, including on mid-drive bikes like the Terns, is $20-30. Similar price discrepancies apply for things like brake adjustments, or pad replacements.

At $1.5k, the Aventon is not a bad deal as long as you're aware of the fact that service will frequently be more expensive, and that the pedal assist does not feel as natural as that of the Bosch units on the Terns. For some people, that's OK, for others it's not. If at all possible, go give both bikes a test ride and see if the difference matters enough to you.

I remember when I saw this deal last November and immediately purchased because I thought "wow $500/$600 off is a great deal."

As soon as the holidays were over, the "regular" price of the Abound dropped from $2200 to $1650 overnight.

For this bike, the credit would $400 for most people and $700 for financially distressed people in a special assistance program. Details are in the link you provided

Yes, but the post holiday price didn't include all the accessories. The deal with the accessories is still superior

I love this bike. The torque sensor is so smooth. Killer deal. I paid probably $500 more last year!

I had great experience and support after buying my Aventon Abound from Electric Surf Co last year! It's awesome to see them mentioned on here.

You have backwards. Boomers more or less invented the internet.

That said I wouldn't agree with the comment you replied to.

What concerns me about the deal are the comments about spokes breaking on the rear wheel.
I have this issue on another ebike, while I fix myself, it is tedious and annoying.
Probably more so on an almost enclosed cargo bike rear wheel.
