If you're using TorGuard VPN, the Mumbai server will not work (apparently Microsoft knows their IP addresses). You'll get the "purchased in a different region from your account" error. However, the Bangalore server works perfectly.
Some other VPNs may also have the same issue. The "purchased in a different region from your account" error typically means you should try connecting to a different city in India or try using a different VPN. It does not mean that you should change your XBox account's region from the US to India, this is never required.

EDIT : looks like the default seller that shows up in the upper right is not the lowest price. Oh well. So I paid like $15 / 6mon code instead of $11.80 which is the current lowest I see. Oh well.
So - make sure you pick the right seller and not just the default!
I kind of went overboard and bought $348 worth and it ended up bringing 2 accounts up to 3 years (had a few months on them still..) and 1 account up by around 1.3 months. Total 28 x 3 month passes.
The codes did not add 3 months and the days/conversion varied. just a heads up.
