For anyone starting out in the hobby, consider using something like this for a 10-20 gall tank, you'll thank me later...

- as others have said, you don't need the carbon. I replaced mine with additional biomax I bought online
- I use mine with a sponge over the intake. You NEED to clean this regularly otherwise it'll clog and your flow will drop. During water changes, hold it in the waste water and give it several good squeezes.
- you'll need to clean the impeller and housing about every 3-4 months
Lastly, not related to the filter. But if you're new to the hobby READ UP ON CYCLING A TANK.

Been trying to figure ours out and can't get it to stop.
We have 3 of these, they are awesome but not perfect. Not self priming. There are horror stories of things that go wrong after a power outage when people are away.

They do not like a ton of water movement. I would get a small or medium sponge filter. Aquarium Coop makes a GREAT one with a lift tube. I would put it in the back, pointing to the front or a slight angle. It would move some water but not enough to push the fish around.
