Kids go for the latest fad but 1. You will save $$$ 2. Teach them to control their desire. A lot of benefit to putting yourself at the right time of a games cycle. You will own them but not at expense of impulse purchase.
We are in a testing phase where companies are holding out longer. Tekken 8, SF6, WWE 2KXX, KOF, Shodown.. all are either not offering complete editions, throwing non-standard terminology to confuse customers (rebuy, no prorate from deluxe edition to ultimate or premium), or simply keeping the price up longer. I use to have a $30 but it's now *maybe* $40, to be reasonable. They argue the cost of development and their corporate behavior has been raising the cost and not lowering it for longer duration. I'm fighting back by reading books, which actually is very beneficial staying away from games. But when the full edition is at $30-$40, I'll bite. Ideally, they seem to logarithmically reach $10-$20 but that when the game is considered so old so looking at 4-5 years.

If they're only going for the story, then yes, the ultimate version will very much be the way to go. This isn't a terrible deal though. I haven't been keeping up with it a ton since launch but are they releasing characters pretty regularly? I haven't seen much for MK1 but they were releasing them left and right for 11.
