Ebikes coming into the USA from China are going to be slapped with a 25% tariff after June 14 it seems:

From my limited research...

Reddit says stay away from this company if you want long term support.

YouTube reviews (paid/incentivized) says great bike for the price.

SD commenters are more interested in teaching Global Macroeconomics 101.

I can't see any reason to spend this much on something that can very well become paperweight after about a year of usage. Which is a shame. I would've liked to have gotten a "Slickdeal".

Geez y'all... Can we talk about the bike instead?

So I bought two of the Austin for $519 for my kids back then. I'm thinking of getting this for myself. They've put over 200 miles on it since and no issues (got 2 flats but thats on my kids).

This one is couple hundred more..but it does have 750w motor/52V 13AH battery vs. 500w/48V 14AH battery on the Austin.

All else seems to be similar--20x3 fat tire, mechanical brakes (ugh), top speed, weight, etc.

Not sure if its worth the $200 if I'm only getting the bigger motor. If they had upgraded the brakes to hydraulics, then maybe its a consideration. But I'll hold off until a better deal comes around...

Lectric bikes are made in Arizona I believe and they are very reputable and price is good
As FancyFlag367 said, Lectric's headquarters are in Phoenix, but their bikes are made in China. Not sure how the rumor got started that they were American made.

But better to have a company with an American footprint compared to one that is completely Chinese.

This right there is the key for most budget ebikes. The majority of them are catalog frames or bikes with custom finishes for the brand. While you might be able to get the same bike direct from China for less, there will be almost zero after purchase support. Being able to call/email someone in the states and get the correct part shipped in a week or less is a huge advantage in a market where many important parts look similar but are absolutely not compatible.

I'm concerned about the ebike battery fire risk. Does anyone know if Engwe ebike battery is ok?

I'm pretty sure they all share the same battery. Just take precautions... I charge mine using a smart timer plug for it that turns off after 8hrs.

Prior to this, my boys also have those chinese made hoverboards and we charge it the same way for years and no issues.

So how long could a buyer of one of these E-Bikes expect the battery to retain enough SoH before the bike itself becomes a paperweight?

That is the problem I have. Once the battery goes on these bikes, how are you going to replace it?

You aren't going to be pedaling a 20 inch bike with fat tires.

I also have concerns about a battery burning down my house.

At the very least, I would wait until companies start putting 10 year LFPs in their bikes.

Purchased two yesterday for the wife and I to use while traveling in the camper van. Specs look great for the price and most of the reviews I found online were positive. I just wish I didn't have to weed through everyone's political and economical opinions to find actual reviews here.

In my experience with e-bikes, I've found that battery replacement is usually straightforward, as the core mechanics are the same across different models. As e-bikes become more popular, replacement battery packs are also becoming more affordable. However, it's important to take care of the batteries to maximize their lifespan. When not in use, keep the packs out of direct sunlight and avoid storing them in hot garages. In cold weather, make sure to winterize them by keeping them out of freezing temperatures. Using a trickle charger can also help keep the cells fresh by charging them intermittently. While all batteries will deteriorate over time, these preventative measures can help extend their usability. I learned this the hard way with my Stromer ST1, which cost me over $5,000 when it was introduced. I neglected the battery maintenance, and now it's just a paperweight since I was unwilling to pay nearly $1,000 for a replacement battery. In the end, you need to weigh your options carefully. Personally, I won't invest that much in an e-bike again without ensuring better battery management and more affordable replacement options.
