Huh, $30 less than earlier today. They're really testing the premium on these eagles. I wonder if they have a bunch purchased before the recent spot dip. They've been available almost every day for a week now?

I notice that it's 916.7‰ rather than 999.9‰. That's a meaningful difference.

Is this gold's version of shrinkflation?

No it's not shrinkflation. Though it's true that this is 22k gold which is 91.67% gold, the actual weight of the coin is 1 full Troy oz of metal (gold). The total weight of the coin is 1.0909 Troy oz so you still get the full 1 Troy of of gold in each coin.

https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin...33.931%20g).

Not sure why the cost for this coin is $20 less than the 99.99% gold buffalo coin. Both are still available at this moment.

Every time I go to Costo for just 1 thing, I end up getting this as an impulse purchase.

Darn it, got another. Prefer Buffalo, which is 99.9%, and usually the same price but it's priced $20 more today as remnant pricing from couple of days ago. I ship to address in Cali to avoid sales tax.

Good link to gold pricing as apprars to be bottome out (retesting) at $2,330 and rebouding and at $2,348 as of 7:07 AM PDT: https://www.kitco.com/charts/gold

.9167 is the standard purity for the Gold Eagle, not .9999. The Gold Buffalo does have the higher purity, at .9999, so there will be a price difference. The Silver Eagle has .9999 purity

Purity does not affect the Costco price between AGE and AGB. Both have 1 oz of gold. When these are posted on Costco website the price has been the same. This is the first time I've seen a price difference between AGEs and AGBs. The AGB was posted earlier in the day when spot was higher.

Both the Eagle and the Buffalo have 1 oz of gold. The Eagle purity is less because it contains extra metals and is heavier than the Buffalo.....but both have 1 oz of gold.

Why is this constantly so hard for many to understand.

American Gold Eagles are an alloy of gold + silver and copper to harden it (gold is soft) so that it's more durable, but makes it heaver than a 1 oz 99.999% pure (24-karat) gold coin.

The total net weight of an American Gold Eagle is 1.0909 troy ozs, which is 1.0000 toz of pure gold + 0.0909 tozs of silver and copper. This makes the 1.0909 toz coin itself 91.67% (22-karat) gold and heavier than a 1.0000 toz 99.999% pure (24-karat) gold coin.

This is correct and silly, as older gold coins like the British Sovereign, dating back to the 1800s, and even the latest releases, Austria Corona, etc., are all alloys; these were actual legal tenders, and 99.9% gold is too soft to be carried around and, like in the good old days, used as real money, even in the USA or paper $ was readily exchanged for actual gold. In fact, most of the sovereign fractional gold coins from Canada are all around ~90% gold as what counts is the AGW or actual gold weight folks.
