I've been using an aftermarket SSD in my SP8 for a few years and never had an issue. I've also never really seen similar reports due to heat, although people do report the symptoms you note due to using a PCIe gen4 drive in a SP8 which was designed for PCIe gen3 drives, something related to power. WD themselves markets this drive as "great for surface devices"
Yep. I will often randomly try adding $0.01 of my discover CB to see if I have a $10 coupon.

Does anyone have any experience with WD SSD warranty replacement? I only have done one with TeamGroup for SSD, and I had to pay $10 to ship it to them in California - then they shipped it to Taiwan just for me to get a replacement.

I wish the MODS would stop adding Microsoft Surface to these 2230 SSD posts. The reason that Microsoft puts their SSDs into an enclosure is that the heatsink for the drive is on the bottom. That way the heat is transferred to the Surface chassis. If you install these bare drives in a Surface, you are going to get a lot of random restarts and other failures. This is NOT a good choice for a Microsoft Surface.
