I used to do the inverted method, then I switched over to using James Hoffman's instructions a few months ago, and I like it better. No matter what you (reasonably) do, you're going to make good coffee in the Aeropress. I just like the way I currently do it better. I like the process. It's a little less stressful of a morning task if you're not inverting.

If you use the normal method (non-inverted) with the paper filter, no coffee will get through the filter if you put the plunger in after you add your water -- similar to putting your thumb over a straw and keeping the water from falling out.

Not knocking any method people want to use, but if you're a die-hard inverter, it's worth trying it the normal way if you haven't done it in a while just to see if you can tell a difference, if you like the process better, etc.

If you prefer paper filters to metal, or like some use both simultaneously, you can use a 2.5-inch (63.5mm) circle punch, like those used for scrap booking, and punch filter discs out of commercial filters. Works perfectly.

BS is a harsh word - It's more like indistinguishable difference. So brew it either way you want.

I use inverted method because my coffee wouldn't sip through the filter using upright method.

Lots of discussion revolving this, but a lot of people (including James Hoffman, coffee authority) thinks the inverted method is BS. But the beauty of aeropress is that you can tweak your process very easily depending on your views. Personally I don't ever use inverted, and still enjoy delicious coffee.

Highly recommend aero press in general.

How is being able to control exactly how long you brew the coffee BS?

Fellow Prismo and Aeropress' own filter caps obviate the need for 'inversion' flip, and Prismo comes with a metal filter:

I regret my choice of words, and you're right. There is some drippage with the normal method, and for perfectionists, it might make the difference.

Dang.. I wish I had waited before buying the travel version. I have the older original version and just replaced the rubber plunger on it and it's as good as new but if I needed a backup, another of the same would have been better. The travel one is slightly smaller and I don't like adding water to my already-brewed coffee (aka, I'm not a huge fan of Americano... mostly just because of the extra pouring at the end and then hoping I didn't dilute things too much LOL)

It depends on who you're referring to, I guess. You're not entirely wrong; there is a big audience who swore by the inverted method and "proved" how it is "better" than the normal method. However if I remember correctly, James Hoffman only said he couldn't make out any distinctive benefit, hence my response.

I've used aeropress daily for about 4-5 years now and I had tried both methods. I prefer inverted because I sometimes don't place the filter just right, so there'd be leaks, which led to less desired coffee. If you can manage the filter position then normal method is fine. Yes I've spilled and made a mess using inverted method too, but I've gotten better at it so it's my preferred choice.. You just have to try and see which method gives you a more consistent result without the mess.

I personally prefer paper filter than SS filter (from previous pour over experience). Not sure if aeropress brewing method makes any difference but I doubt it. Purely personal taste preference.

You can do that without dealing with the whole precarious nature of inversion.

Just put the plunger in then don't press. A few drips will come out the bottom, but then the air seal will prevent any more liquid coming out till you press down.

That's how I brew each morning, 20g Beans, 300g water, 2 minute steep before swirl, then press.
