These shoes are incredible, however there have been recent issues with several of their models

1) Some models have moved from "Original Fit" to "Standard Fit". Those who have become accustomed to Original Fit due to the excellent wide toe box and support only where it's needed, will be completely and utterly disappointed with how tight fitting Standard Fit feels. I am unable to wear certain models now, which is unfortunate b/c they had models which provided key support ("stability models") while maintaining that Original Fit profile. Now they don't make any true stability shoe with Original Fit.

2) The build quality is becoming abysmal. For full details, you can read the reviews. Everything from the adhesives used to adhere the tread to the foam, to the longevity of the tread itself, to the interior lining fabric. Due to an injury, I am not longer able to run. So I am only walking every day, 3 miles. Maybe not every day, but every day that weather permits. And I can't get any of their models to last longer than 6mo before they start exhibiting problems. Currently, I have a pair of Paradigms and the interior lining around the heel is tearing and digging into the back of my ankle. Prior to that, the black rubber tread started delaminating after 5 months on another pair. In both cases, I submitted warranty claims with Altra. I received immediate responses. However the start to finish process from when I initiated to warranty claim to when I received replacement pair, was over a month. Truly unacceptable, as if it wasn't bad enough that multiple pairs of their shoes fall apart in months from someone who is just walking. I read some reviews where some runners are having to replace these things every 3mo. It's complete bullshit

In summary, the shoes are still incredibly supportive especially for those with injuries or bad joints. But they are making unnecessary changes for no apparent reason, and the quality is completely nose driving

I bought a pair of the vanish carbons. I ordered up a 1/2 size (I normally wear 11 1/2 in Altra), but these are definitely a little slimmer in the toe box.

I know these wear down quickly, but looking forward to trying them out for races that are 10 miles and up 👍

What brands are better that offer a zero drop and wide toe box? I switch between xero and Altras and the Altras just disintegrate too fast.

Didn't know about that transaction. Makes sense though. Peas in a pod. After the minimalist movement went bust a decade ago, Vibram managed to find a niche supplying trail outsoles for other brands. But Altra never really recovered from the bust. Following a series a setbacks at Vibram that included class action lawsuits by consumers who suffered injuries from wearing those incredibly stupid VF barefoot "shoes" the founder, or someone else high up in the pecking order, of VIbram decamped to start a new shoe brand, Topo. That brand, just like Altra, has no pull with today's consumers and has an infinitesimal market share in road and trail running. Like, who is going to buy an Altra or Topo shoe in freaking 2024? There's much better shoes out there from other brands that have bigger RnD budgets and the deep pockets and relationships with SEA contract manufacturers to churn out higher quality shoes. I just see Altra as gimmick brand that never kept up with the changing trends in footwear.

Maybe Topo? The former head of Vibram left to found the Topo brand.
