These shoes are incredible, however there have been recent issues with several of their models

1) Some models have moved from "Original Fit" to "Standard Fit". Those who have become accustomed to Original Fit due to the excellent wide toe box and support only where it's needed, will be completely and utterly disappointed with how tight fitting Standard Fit feels. I am unable to wear certain models now, which is unfortunate b/c they had models which provided key support ("stability models") while maintaining that Original Fit profile. Now they don't make any true stability shoe with Original Fit.

2) The build quality is becoming abysmal. For full details, you can read the reviews. Everything from the adhesives used to adhere the tread to the foam, to the longevity of the tread itself, to the interior lining fabric. Due to an injury, I am not longer able to run. So I am only walking every day, 3 miles. Maybe not every day, but every day that weather permits. And I can't get any of their models to last longer than 6mo before they start exhibiting problems. Currently, I have a pair of Paradigms and the interior lining around the heel is tearing and digging into the back of my ankle. Prior to that, the black rubber tread started delaminating after 5 months on another pair. In both cases, I submitted warranty claims with Altra. I received immediate responses. However the start to finish process from when I initiated to warranty claim to when I received replacement pair, was over a month. Truly unacceptable, as if it wasn't bad enough that multiple pairs of their shoes fall apart in months from someone who is just walking. I read some reviews where some runners are having to replace these things every 3mo. It's complete bullshit

In summary, the shoes are still incredibly supportive especially for those with injuries or bad joints. But they are making unnecessary changes for no apparent reason, and the quality is completely nose driving

Love these shoes. From the large toe box helping with pinch calluses to the zero drop taking pressure off the ball of your foot these have helped immensely.

Anyone care to explain their lineup. Which one is for daily training, tempo work, racing?

I have run races (5k through marathons) in both the Tempo and Carbons. It's hard to say scientifically that they improved my performance, but I found them to be within expected comfort levels. Definitely tighter at the end of a marathon than running in a more "daily trainer" model, but that's the tradeoff.
Anecdotally, I sometimes do track workouts in the Tempo or Carbon, and am more likely to see improvements in my stats (eg "threshold pace" upgrade reported by my watch) when wearing them.

The Carbon 2 just came out so I think the Carbon 1 will be on clearance. Reviews on the original were mixed, with the 2 being better reviewed so far.

On Altra reliability - yeah, I have heard all the reports. YMMV (literally). I had one shoe where one section of the grip just unglued and vanished one day, when they were reasonably new. Otherwise, I put a lot of mileage on the various models with no build issues. Comparable to reported lifespans of other running shoe brands. And that's the results from a lot of pairs - but because I'm doing a lot of distance, not because they're failing on me.

Overall my feet are quite happy with Altra, And I think I've bought every pair at 40%+ off.

I had the Torin 6s for 300 miles & I think they were toast probably 50 miles before that. I run 3-5 miles per day and they were really comfortable for the first 100-200 miles, then I noticed slight shin splints during the last 100 miles. I track my runs with my garmin so mileage is fairly accurate. For $50-60, seems like a fair trade, however, I just bought some Asics Dynablast 3 for the same price and they are rated for longer life. Could be my running style, but at the same price, I felt like looking for other brands.

I only know about the hiking/trail running lineup, which consists of the Superior, Olympus, Lone Peak, and Timpanogos (all named after peaks along the Wasatch mountains of Utah).

They go, in order of least padded/lightest to most cushioned/heaviest...

Superior -> Lone Peak -> Timpanogos -> Olympus

These are bad for those who get plantar fasciitis, FYI. The zero drop exacerbates it and will make it flair up faster than normal

Yes, good summary - as a long time Altra user, I agree. Sad to see them go downhill!

Some of the altra models have decent quality and some don't. This version of torin tends to tear in the forefoot (side) and the outsole peels off. Sierra return policy gives you only 40 days.

Altra has always had quality issues with their shoes.

Can confirm as far as durability with the Torin 6. Soles wear out quickly if you're wearing them on pavement.

Didn't know about that transaction. Makes sense though. Peas in a pod. After the minimalist movement went bust a decade ago, Vibram managed to find a niche supplying trail outsoles for other brands. But Altra never really recovered from the bust. Following a series a setbacks at Vibram that included class action lawsuits by consumers who suffered injuries from wearing those incredibly stupid VF barefoot "shoes" the founder, or someone else high up in the pecking order, of VIbram decamped to start a new shoe brand, Topo. That brand, just like Altra, has no pull with today's consumers and has an infinitesimal market share in road and trail running. Like, who is going to buy an Altra or Topo shoe in freaking 2024? There's much better shoes out there from other brands that have bigger RnD budgets and the deep pockets and relationships with SEA contract manufacturers to churn out higher quality shoes. I just see Altra as gimmick brand that never kept up with the changing trends in footwear.
