Shrinking & Inaccurate Restaurant Base
I foolishly used the PDF link and inKind website to check the restaurants. It's inaccurate. Download the inKind app, sign up for an account, and then decide if it's gonna be useful to you. The restaurant base is small.
If you live in a place with a lot of restaurants on this app (e.g., NYC, SF, DC, etc...) this can be a great deal. Essentially 40% off bills and paying bills with the app is usually very easy. But note that the credit does *not* work for gratuities, which are charged on your card with the app.
It is not a scam. It's an app with actual restaurants, that accept the app as payment. Restaurants are not stiffed by the platform.

What it is, is fairly small and slow to grow their list of restaurants, and works best in major metropolitan areas. If you don't live in a major city, you may want to consider passing on this deal.

Even better than the $70 for $100 that this usually goes for if there are restaurants in your area that accepts inkind. Can confirm you can use it like a gift card without any subscription.

But you don't save any money so it's kind of a subscription scam
I'm going to chime in here, regular InKind user in Nashville for about 3 years now. This is no scam, let me lay it all out for everyone:
1. InKind Pass is a paid subscription that gives you 20% back on all InKind restaurant bills. The "normal" InKind is no fee and free to join.
2. As others have stated, you can use InKind credit for the restaurant bill and the tax, but not the tip. That comes from the credit card you associated with the app.
3. As of right now, there are only 10 restaurants in Nashville, but they are GOOD restaurants, not some crappy need-the-business kind of restaurants (I'm looking at you Groupon). At least 4 of them I go to regularly (Bakersfield, Boqueria, City Winery, Electric Jane).
4. Unlike things like restaurant.com, you can combine paying with InKind with any other deal (Happy Hour, etc.). It's like paying in cash equivalent roughly.
5. It is incredibly easy to use the App - you tell the app what restaurant you are at, punch in the check number at the bottom of your check and it pulls up the check. You pay (including tip) and show the server. Done.
6. There are currently always lots of deals on TOP of the 40% off for the original credit, like most of the restaurants right now have 15% credit back, spend $75 get $25 credit back, etc. I've earned lots of credits and used them with no issues. I believe this is InKind buying market share, I don't expect this level of stacked discounts to last...

This (and the Offline Restaurant app) are the best kept secrets in the Nashville restaurant scene IMHO.

Another long time user and happy with the service. AMEX gave the Inkind Pass free for a year, and sometimes offers pretty good money back deals.

Honestly it's easy to use and worth it. They also often have offers that stack. Like $25 off $75. Etc. I maybe use it once every 2-3 months - but it's a good value and easy to use.

I'm in the Dallas area.

The restaurants you can use this for may be very limited since it heavily depends on where you live so just be aware of that fact before you buy.
It works for Gramercy tavern. I use it there every month!

For the Subscription service, do you still earn 20% back when you pay with the INKIND gift cards?

And do restaurants let you use it on take out orders? Or is it dine in only?

Feels like inkind is the new restaurants.com which ultimately bankrupted restaurants on their coupons

I'm not sure how good of a deal this actually is. It's dependent on your credit card offers and inkind in-app offers. Amex have had spend $50 get $50 back, Citi has spend $50 get $25 back, both better than Costco. ON TOP OF THAT though inkind may offer buy $50 worth of credits, get another $50 (I haven't seen that in a while though tbf). The more common is probably spend $50, get an extra $25 in credits which is worse than Costco but better significantly if you have any credit card offer.

Check your credit card offers and of course number of stores and which stores as the app I feel has mostly high-end restaurants (dependent on location, I have a sample of 3 big cities) to see if this deal is any good.

If you are only buying this for one restaurant, apply the credit as a house account. When my restaurant left the network, they only accepted house account credit. I wasn't interested in any of the other restaurants.

Honestly, here's a simple flowchart:

New user? Yes: continue questions. No: stop. You should know whether to buy.
Do you live in SF or NYC? Yes: continue questions. No: stop, this is 90% not for you.
Do you like expensive restaurants or some mid range local chains? Yes: continue questions. No: stop. Likely not worth your time.
Check out the inKind restaurant list. See if it's for you. Grab the subscription if it makes sense. Then figure out if gift cards would be worth it for you.

Overall, this is worth the time if you live in nyc/sf, have a subscription for the 20% cash back, and like to have regular restaurants you go to.

I wish more high end steakhouses took this, but likely not going to. I'll keep using my stuff at the coffee shops.
I'm near DC and can't even count the number near me on the map. 50 at least. It's not just ny or sf lol.

You can only use inKind when ordering in-person. You would need to ask a server to generate a bill to pay using inKind, and it depends on them if they are willing to do that.
Curious what you mean by if they are willing to generate a bill to use in kind. Do you mean few restaurants that participate sometimes do not accept inkind?

Can you use its on takeout?
Ive done it a few times, you just need the reciept number so you can add it to your app and pay on the app.

No, I was referring to takeout only.

I am a new user as of today, but my take would be that the point of sale may be configured in a different manner at a dedicated takeout counter, and one of the changes may cause the receipt code that inKind requires to not be present. The cashier may need to generate a receipt that would traditionally go in a folio and be placed at the table.
