I actually prefer molybdenum drill bits for drilling steel at least with using a cordless drill and not a drill press. Cobalt are good but definitely require proper care and cutting oil. They are also super hard and snap more easily. Drilling straight is big factor too. Sometimes in the field it's jus not possible. Molybdenum also resist more heat then Cobalt. Many manufacturers make there "super premium" bits and they are Molybdenum and not Cobalt. I think Cobalt may be better with hardened and stainless steel though. Molybdenum tend to be cheaper too. I think the black and gold are some kind of Molybdenum as they look just like them although it doesn't say on the package. If they are the black oxide those are garbage tho. These dewalt black and gold are actually a good bang for your buck with drilling steel although it's a small set with not every size. Sometimes you jus need beater bits instead of always using nice expensive bits when drilling at awkward angles and such
Why are some pictures the black oxide and some are the black and gold on the listing? The black and gold like this says it is are decent especially for the price but black oxide from anything I've tried are garbage. I'm talking about drilling steel though as that is what I primarily do

Once you start using pilot points, you won't want to go back to these drill bits

these are fine for wood.. if you want bits to last drilling steel, get cobalt drill bits. don't fall for marketing.

Black and Gold are just black oxide coated cutting edges that quickly wear away with "gold" flutes for corrosion prevention.

And the part number, DWA1184, just refers to plain black oxide at the Dewalt page.

I've had a set of these for at least 10 years, and they have worked just fine for me to use around the house. I probably paid more than $10.

Not sure how I feel about Amazon encroaching on HD and Lowes domain here. Though HD and Lowes of course encroached and killed all our local hardware stores. Who knew buying drill bits was such a morally difficult exercise.
