The specs say these are NiMH, not lithium, so they are the same battery chemistry as a typical rechargeable AA.
Rechargeable AAs are 1.2V so I think that means it is 4000mah but at 1.2 volts! The 1200mah i think is at 3.7 volts (standard lithium rechargeable). But still you are right, 2*AA's equals 4.8 Watt hours, but the rechargeable is 4.44 watt hours.
Why is it 2024 and we're having to buy 3rd party rechargeable batteries for our Xbox controllers? Ffs.

Not according to that graph above, but I could be wrong.

can you charge the batteries in the controller with just a usb c, or do you need the docking charger to charge?

What's the advantage to these over rechargeable AAs? 2 AAs would give you over 4000mah.

I bought a single cheap battery, and my controller charges it fine when it's connected to USB C charger. There's no reaction to let you know it's charging/full, but it does work fine.

I would be surprised if these were any different.

Oh good call I didn't notice that. It just depends if it is a 2 cell 2.4V bat or a 3.6V 3 cell battery. But yeah lithium would be superior and more energy dense product probably.

The Xbox controller doesn't recharge batteries. These have the tech inside to allow them to be recharged when you plug a cord into the controller. The tech that allows them to recharged takes up some space, hence the smaller capacity.

I'm using Amazon basics AA rechargeable just fine with series x controller, can just swap for another set if the battery is low.

I think the batteries in the controller are in series not parallel so you would not double the capacity (2x2000mah). You instead double the voltage (2x1.2v). The highest legit AA capacity I've seen was 2500mah. I agree buying rechargeable batterie cells is better than this system of rechargeable battery for most cases. I bought an insignia system like this, but for the Xbox one. THE REASON was for my nephew it was easier for him to swap them out. He wasn't good about charging the singular cells, and sometimes he actually threw them away thinking they were regular batteries. This system is easier for some kids.
Also if one of these packs goes down these companies usually use a cell called a 4/5 AA. I have cut open cases, and replaced them before with my Wii.
