The Classic 2 has the mesh gasket, air lift hinge, and Kontrol tower which the Classic 1 does not have.
There is no after market air lift hinge. The dome of the Classic series is not that heavy. If possible, have the people whom you would allow to open and close your Kamado Joe test out the Classic 1. If they can lift the dome just fine, it's not that big of a deal.
Smokeware makes a stainless steel vent cap that can be viewed as a direct upgrade to the Kontrol Tower. The paint of the Kontrol Tower can chip over time.
KJ1 has a felt gasket instead of the oven style mesh gasket. You can replace the felt gasket with mesh gasket when the felt gasket fails.
In my opinion, if you can wait for the KJ Classic 1 sale, you should get that or go bigger. The cost difference between the two is not worth the several hundred dollars as long as you can lift up the dome without any assistance.
By the way, BGE warranty is not transferable so it's YMMV.
