It's not always about you.

There are many people who don't drive, can't drive, don't have a vehicle, or for some other reason can't or don't want to, or prefer not to shop physically in the store.

Instacart provides a service. It doesn't sell groceries or other physical items. The stores sell the items, Instacart shops for pickup and/or delivers. There's a cost to that which many of us are willing to pay either due to necessity, convenience, or simply because we want to.

Costco same day actually is Instacart. The difference is that the shopping platform is on Costco's same-day website and not on the Instacart website .

It is entirely separate. Any cart or order placed on one website is not available to view on the other. Any instacart gift cards applied to one or not available on the other. Delivery scheduling is also separate.

To not be scammy, simply leave the prices as is, and at the end, say here's the fees for using Instacart's shopping and delivery service. Increasing the price of an item is absolutely sneaking in, even if they put a message somewhere that says prices are higher if they aren't making it clear how much higher each item is compared to in store.
Agree. Most people don't know how much they're paying for Instacart's service, and that is an extremely intentional decision on Instacart's part. I find it a scummy business practice.

He wasn't just talking about himself, he was talking about circumstances that affect everyone.

However, you then made it about a much more specific segment of people (people who don't drive, can't drive, don't have a vehicle, or for some other reason can't or don't want to, or prefer not to shop physically in the store).

How was it that you know that most people don't know how much Instacart costs them? I haven't seen any statistics on that. Perhaps you can tell me where you found that information.
Do you work for Instacart or something?

Increasing the price of an item is absolutely sneaking in, even if they put a message somewhere that says prices are higher if they aren't making it clear how much higher each item is d I disagree. The price is not "snuck in".

Doing it your way would run into the problem of having different stores having different fees. that makes it more complicated to shop rather than just seeing a price and knowing whether you're willing to pay that price or not for an item.

What you're missing here is that in the end the cost would be the same. The same number of dollars would be required for an order regardless of whether the price of the items were increased before ordering or whether the increase in cost for the service was applied in fees at the end.

If the cost was applied at the end then BJ's and Costco would have higher fees than for example Walmart who doesn't mark up any of the products that are sold from Walmart through Instacart. And you wouldn't know what that fee would be until the end at which point you might decide you need to shop at another store and then you have to go to the whole thing again. It's much more efficient to know the cost of an item to start with and know that the fees are consistently applied to different stores.
I still get a crap ton of random fees added on at the end even with the inflated prices so I don't see your point here
