The active ingredient of the Advion baits is Indoxacarb 0.6%.
Terro T502 in this deal has the same active ingredient (Fipronil 0.05%) as the commercial-use Maxforce FC Magnum.
You can also use other baits with the following active ingredients for rotation:
Hydramethylnon
Abamectin
Dinotefuran
Also consider using IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) if you have German Roach infestation.

Either the type we have now are resistant or the Advion I got was old stock. Hard to tell when they don't even put any kind of expiration date on their product.
What I really want to know is if this is effective against other kinds of pests, since it acts kind of like a barrier?

I'll put them down whenever I see a few ants. Within a day, it will have attracted an insane number of ants so be prepared for that if it's in a visible area of your home. Within a couple days they'll slowly start to disappear, and then I won't see ants for a long time. They take it back to their nest and feed it to the other ants, and then they all die off. It's also pretty safe for humans (to my knowledge).
