Why this over an old dell server machine with 6+ hdd bays? Ebay/facebook is littered with them.
I personally like synology's OS, but comparing a cobbled together old server with a NAS is simply apples and oranges… it just depends how you are going to use it and how much time you are going to spend tinkering…. My time is worth a lot so I went with the out of the box solution… a NAS.
Not sure about this. The HD cost does seem high and especially for a 5400 rpm.
I know heat, electrical spikes/brownouts are what kills these things.
In a corporate environment, this is rarely an issue but for a consumer product, I chose the 3 bay solution because I've had to put in solutions for all the issues I mentioned.
Having said that, Qnap is an awesome brand and I'd choose them for my nas needs.

I'm using a Mac mini + 8 bay thunderbolt. I love it compared to my previous proxmox/freenas/smartOS solutions before.
Simple, performant, and effortless.
