40 degrees means that you will survive. It does not mean that you will be warm and comfortable.

Definitely a summer bag and nothing else.

I wouldn't use that bag under 50 let alone 40.

Depends on if it's independently rated or not.

With that being said, I highly recommend anyone here to only shop for EN or ISO rated bags. They are 3rd parties that send every bag through the same test, and give it two ratings:

Tested lower limit = Absolute lowest temp level for survivability.

Tested comfort = lowest temp level to stay comfortable/warm.

Note: these are based on the person using it having long sleeve base layers (fleece pants / shirt or similar material based on preference), socks, and a beanie.

People tend to forget the proper base layers when using a bag. I know I did the first time I camped and now, I remember every time.

Picked one up to replace my Coleman Sun Ridge that is 15+ years old. Need a lightweight bag for summer camping when it's 60-70 at night and this should be perfect.

I agree with you here. Get propelry tested equipment if you're camping in places where your life depends on it. The sleeping bag in this ad is perfectly adequate for most summer camping.

When I was in scouts, I'd sleep in boxers and a beanie in my 0° mummy bag during Klondike campouts in NE Ohio. I'd throw the next days clothes in at the foot of my bag to keep them relatively warm as well.

Base layers are important but having a good properly rated bag is even more important.
