It will take 2-4 months to grow a seedling, to get a bonsai like the ones in the product page takes years.

There is no such thing as a bonsai seed, these are scams. You aren't going to grow a miniature tree in a pot like this. Bonsai is an art form that takes years to get results (and is a very satisfying and rewarding process). This is a great way to have people give up on the hobby.

Easier said than done. These kits are a bit of a scam.

Takes a lot of time, effort, and luck to get seedlings into "bonsai trees" (in quotes because actual bonsai trees are supposed to start with a mature-ish plant, which is then pruned down to start training as a bonsai tree)

Bonsai is just the art of making a dwarf tree; it's not hard to prune but it's difficult to keep alive cause they need constant water and humidity; most bonsai planters are shallow so it makes it more likely to get root bound than traditional planters that retain more soil for moisture

You can't put potting soil in cause it retains too much moisture which will root rot but you want almost a Sandy to loamy soil and then a drip dish to allow it to catch the excess water

This looks like it might be a fun gift; something unusual yet likely appealing to the recipient. I think it looks more expensive than it costs (on sale).

I think if you end up with three bonsai trees for $12.50, that's a super slick deal. I don't know how much of a green thumb one needs to be in order to successfully grow these.

Well good point but people who give up that early aren't fit for bonsai growing as a hobby. The wrong info in q & a does ruin the expectation a little.

The wrong Q&A is just the start, not to mention they provide 3 species of trees that aren't even grown in the same USDA zones.

There are a few more options on the site for half off. I saw a pepper kit and an herb kit. Nothing too exciting if you're already into gardening, but maybe good for the garden-curious or as a gift.

I got the herb kit as a gift and they all grew. My favorite part was the nice wooden box tbh. I slapped on some linseed oil and still use it to hold garden hand tools.

You can get a bonsai plant from Costa Farms which is sold in big box stores for a bit more money, shave a year or two off growing and actually enjoy it.

If people are buying it for people with no experience because they don't recognize the scam of a product this is, it won't get used as they won't care for it for the time it takes to enjoy it.

If buying for yourself, and you want to feel good about "starting from scratch", go pluck a random seedling, get a pot and the appropriate soil.

As commenters say, anything can be a bonsai. I even have a tiny lemon "bonsai" tree with lemons on it...so you can even just take seeds the next time you get you water with lemon...bam! Free plant. Now that's a slick deal.

I got one of these kits as a gift- 2 of the 4 seed types sprouted, but the Brazilian flame tree was the only one that stuck around. I think everything else damped out or failed to sprout. When I tried to replant the flame tree seedlings in larger pots, they didn't do well with the transplant. The little media pucks and mini fabric planters aren't a suitable long-term home for a bonzai, but that goes against starting them in coco fiber starter media with these types of seeds imo. I think there are better ways to get friends into the hobby. This is more of a tree seed starter kit, and not a great one at that.
