Hassle of going to an urgent care vs. emergency room (to get your finger stitched back?)
Urgent care and ER are effectively one and the same at Kaiser, they call it urgent care but if, for example, I came in with a ruptured appendix they would do the surgery then and there. So I refer to it as urgent care because they do but if I was a member of a different medical group I would just call it the ER.

And if Sawstop gets the table saw safety legislation that they want pushed through, no cheap saws will ever be available again. They're trying to monopolize the market through federal regulation.
I don't think you have the full picture. Sawstop is voluntarily relinquishing its IP rights—hence no other manufacturer will be required to pay SS for licensing its IP.

If Sawstop were a better overall saw, it would be a consideration. But im just not impressed with their build, for the price.

They are excellent at marketing though, that's for sure!!!
I've always heard the saws are built quite well... Never actually used one though. What do you not like about the saws?

If you do a lot of woodworking, you should consider saving up. All it takes is one emergency room visit and this thing is likely paid for itself. Not even considering the cost of a finger! haha
This, I bought a used one because a new one was going to be like $1500 more.

The saws are on par with every other top brand, anyone that says otherwise is just oissy because they cost more.

The monopolization part isn't quite true, as SawStop has said they would give up their patents if the regulation passes. Still, the regulation would almost certainly remove new cheap saws from market, first because of the extra technology / parts that would then be required in saws, plus the fact that it's just physically hard / impossible for a cheaper & lighter jobsite style saw to handle the forces & energy involved when insta-stopping a blade. Stumpy Nubs has a good video on the whole situation.
I think SawStop said they would release one of their patents during those hearings, but my understanding is there's a bunch of patents they still have in effect that they didn't not commit to releasing or licensing.

I love the technology. I'm leery of the government regulating out a huge swath of the affordable end market.

Not only are Sawstops heavier than the same model saw by Powermatic or Unisaw, but only a couple hundred bucks more.

With the current rebate, the 5hp ICS is less money than the PM2000 at my local tool store.

The kickback happens, and then that's usually how your hand ends up in the blade.

Pretty unlikely that experienced woodworkers are just feeding their hands straight into the carbide.
unlikely but possible. that's why they are called accidents. Only in horror movies are they done on purpose. Stick Out Tongue

I have heard of people making the case for starting with a track saw in lieu of a table saw for beginner woodworkers. There are some videos out there making this point though I haven't watched them through.

I think I'd advise somebody just getting into woodworking to consider a miter saw and track saw before getting a table saw.

I started with a table saw so it is my first go to but I'm trying to shift that habit a little and keep a track saw cutting station set up for convenience.

A track saw could never replace a table saw with a dado for advanced joints, but this probably doesn't apply to most woodworkers.

Looks like they put this off for I believe 5 years, because sawstop is trying to use legislation like you said.

I know three older gentlemen that are all lifelong woodworkers and master craftsmen . They all use safety precautions and have each been doing this on an ongoing basis for 50+ years each. Each one is missing part of one or more fingers from a tablesaw. My advice? If you wont get a saw stop, buy a track saw instead of a table saw. And never use aluminum pushers as they turn rapidly into shrapnel.

I read a bunch of articles on this. It appears that sawstop claims they will license, but then they won't actually do it. They jerked a few companies around for years. They also want as much profit for each licensed saw as they make selling their own.
