And for context, there is no M3 iPad. They skipped a generation or M processor.

I have a dissenting viewpoint, having gone from a 2018 12.9" to a 2020 11" and recently a 2022 12.9".

The 12.9" is a better choice if you know you need the extra screen space (rigorous notes, multitasking with apps/windows, art, etc.) and intend to kit it out with a keyboard and use it more like a laptop.

The 11" gets you 95% of the way there, but if you're only in it for media consumption, reading, recipes, a companion device to a laptop, it's a way better pick for the value. The 12.9" is unwieldy in the hands, and I've found it harder to use without setting down on my lap or a surface.

Is this also applicable for open box items?

No. The fine print says open box items excluded.

tempting, but already had m2 11 inch pro 256gb when it was on sale for $650 month back.
Honestly the 12.9 is so large that I stopped carrying mine. If I needed that I migh my as well bring a laptop.

Agreed. I returned the 12.9 for an 11" because it was so big. Might as well bring a 13" MBP.

The 12.9 is a sight to behold, the best toy out there. If I was going any smaller, the novelty/cool factor wears off and questions of why an iPad even exists in the first place start to arise.

For me it is the reverse. A 12.9 is so big, it loses all the portability factor for me and I might as well bring a laptop. And in fact, the 12.9 with a case is the same weight as many thin laptops.

I like the 11 a lot better.

For anyone looking to save even more, I'd recommend looking into the open-box units, either Excellent or Very Good. Pricing isn't as great as it was during the Father's Day sale a few weeks ago (where I picked up a virtually brand new "Good" 12.9 for $650), but the device will most likely still qualify for AppleCare+ and/or be a return because someone didn't like the size.

I somewhat agree, although my 512 GB excellent open box came in a plastic shipping bag Frown The unit was in a perfect shape with a screen protector installed (which I didn't really care for). There was over 11 mo left on the original warranty too. Having said that, the open box prices aren't as good as last month's Father's Day deal. Got mine for $828 but now selling for $900+.

The 12.9" has one critical advantage over the 11": it is basically the size of a sheet of 8.5" x 11" letter paper, so documents in that very common format can be immediately displayed at full scale. Avoiding one double-tap on the 11" (assuming standard-sized margins on that document) doesn't sound like a lot, but if you do a lot of document handling—electronic notebook, reading scholarly papers, grading assignments, revising documents, sheet music display—the aggravation of having to re-zoom everything adds up quite quickly.
