I own this. It's not nearly as "illustrated" as you might think. It's got maybe 15-20 drawings/rough napkin sketches in the entire book(s), some of which are very tiny. Nice collection though.

Working my way through the Harry Potter illustrated editions, LotR was next. Hopefully a similar deal for The Hobbit series one.

It's nothing like the illustrated HP books but it is nice.

In 1989 a three issue comic book series was released in English based on The Hobbit, written by Chuck Dixon, who is most well-known for his writing for DC Comics (Punisher, Batman, Nightwing). It was illustrated by David T. Wenzel source [voyagecomics.com]
They're the only truly illustrated Tolkien books ive seen

Allow me to introduce you to the KING of Illustrated Hobbit books! As a kid who grew up watching the Rankin Bass animated hobbit.. I knew I had to have it. https://tolkienlibrary.com/tolkie...001342.php

I wish there was something more illustrated available for the LOTR.

Don't get me wrong. I love reading. But prefer books with much more illustrations (not full on cartoon)... just some stills every so often denoting what's going on... was on the fence. But after reading the reviews it seems this book does not have many illustrations I am expecting. Thnx

Beware this isn't the Alan Lee illustrated edition. The illustrations are from Tolkien himself. That's why they're kind of rough. They're more like sketches.

How are the illustrated HP editions? Thinking of picking up the first five that are released for $77.36.

I believe there are 32 illustrations but your sentiment is correct. Still very nice collectible

Weighs 3.5 lbs. I've got the Alan Lee illustrated edition, and while it's a nice collectible, I can't imagine actually reading it given the weight and bulkiness of it.
