I own this. It's not nearly as "illustrated" as you might think. It's got maybe 15-20 drawings/rough napkin sketches in the entire book(s), some of which are very tiny. Nice collection though.

You might be interested in the Alan Lee illustrated editions [amazon.com]. Not sure the exact illustration count, but the artwork is classic and was heavily influential on the art direction for the films.

Yeah, it's not cheap, but keep an eye on it as I've seen it go on sale for as low as $75 for the set. Still pricey, but the quality is really quite good, so I think it's worth it, personally.

Fraid not. I've just been fortunate enough to check the product page when it's on sale. I do know some Tolkien book collectors groups might share sales from time to time.

LOTR is typically broken into 3 volumes, fellowship, two towers and return of the kings…. So this is one that contains all. Hobbit is usually viewed as a stand alone, I don't have this volume but I doubt it's included.
