Slightly cheaper if you clip the 8% off 3 items coupon and add two of these pencils: https://a.co/d/01PUSoaK

Okay, I give up... this is obviously some sort of uniquely Japanese thing that is completely foreign in concept to Americans, but what is it, and what is the appeal?

if you go to japan or taiwan, they have these machines in front of every convenience store and they have cute little toy collectibles that are essentially blind boxes. they also have a store with a thousand of these machines in a mall in tokyo.

very popular for native people and tourists alike.

Whats the point of getting this though? Like is it a novelty thing to place in your home for your kids? Do you have to put your own toys inside the capsules?

personally I have a lot of capsules (with toys inside) left over from the times I've been to Asia and they are sitting in a drawer somewhere. so I'll most likely store the gatchapon, that I don't display out on my work desk or elsewhere, in this machine. also yeah if nieces/nephews come over it's a fun little machine for them to get toys out of.

My plan is to turn it into a game for parties. I'll fill the capsules with either a prize, or the name of shot they'll have to take, and have guests put a coin in.

Of course, you don't need a machine to do this, but my wife and I have been to Japan, and have fond memories from there. (We're actually planning a second trip next year.) Several of our friends have been, too. So there's a big nostalgia component for us. I don't think there's much value if that's not there.

Gachapon is certainly uniquely japanese. I'm curious from America though, have you never seen a coin machine with prizes/toys in it where you are from? Normally junk for kids tbh like plastic teeth grills or vampire teeth, different shaped little toy balls, or variations of animals/mascots. There used to be at a bunch at supermarkets, arcades, and dollar store in America and some I still see around though there are much less. They are normally in gumball machines with the red tops not in the gachapon style.

Candy/toy dispensers are not a foreign concept to Americans.
