Isn't the new one eligible for the 30% tax credit, whereas the refurb is not?

I was able to file for the tax credit on the refurb, no audits so far! I think as long as it's not explicitly *used* and sold secondhand

I'd like to know. Where did you get that refurb wouldn't be eligible?

Pretty sure the IRS website says used items are not eligible because they may have already been claimed, aka that refurb item could have been claimed by original owner. Haven't looked in a while so maybe the documentations changed

I think it's a gray area. No one has been audited but it's because it's the first year they have allowed battery without solar as a rebate. Look on the gov website and determine for yourself.

Hello All, I searched the IRS website, and "refurbished" is not defined as far as I can tell. Regardless, the manufacturer must - in most cases - purchase the unit to be refurbished in one way or another, usually by issuing a refund. Then, the manufacturer must commit resources (aka "inputs") such as materials and labor to create the refurbished item - in technical terns, a "new" item..

We, as customer, must then purchase said refurbished item - and I, as a businessman/accountant, also considers that as something new in my inventory, purchased from a manufacturer, with a warranty. It is dissimilar from purchasing one "used" or second-hand from Joe next door or from Joe through eBay from across the country.

I also searched for "eBay purchases" on the IRS website (without the quotation marks), and I found nothing that shines any further light on this dilemma.

To me, this is common sense, the manufacturer is clearly creating a new item, categorized as "refurbished" because some of the parts were used, but some of the parts are new.. I wouldn't worry about it anyhow - now that the IRS is better funded, they are going after the real tax cheats - the millionaires and billionaires - instead of the common folk as it was in the past.

All of this said, this is my opinion, not my advice as I am not qualified to do so.
