My thoughts after having many crappy cameras.

Try to get at least one good one. You can use cheaper ones to cover "something happened and a ghost did it at night" is OK for some situations if the one good camera got the critical image capture.

What this means is that you want a system where you can mix and match better cameras. This is one reason why many like vms on pcs like blue iris vs NVRs which work best with only one OEM.

Ipcamtalk has some good threads on this topic...

In terms of deals, Annke normally sells hikvision oem cameras and some have larger sensors ..

Reolink is a very popular brand selling affordable ip poe cameras. Downside is that to keep the afford aspect they use cheaper components and cheat a bit on images .. especially in low light conditions they keep the shutter open longer to get nice still images at the expense of moving images, as well as compatibility issues, such as the noted i-frame issue. Also .. they used to astroturf a massive amount here and in other forums.

Good thing from them is that they are producing more models of cameras now, as if you bought their nvr you basically want to get their cameras.

If you can afford a better setup try to go with something like blue iris or another vms that supports ip cameras well. This way you can mix and match.

If you go with this or another vendors NVR make certain to match it with that oems cameras ( in general )

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank mat2000

Note : those asking about better cameras .. just read the EmpireTech 9th birthday sale is happening starting Sunday this weekend .. looks like some good deals, and even refurbished cameras. Look for the thread on ipcamtalk. Note many like to buy from them on Amazon. Mostly sells Dahua oem cameras.

Otherwise keep an eye on Annke deals .. hopefully will see some during Amazon prime day.

Is the sale on the refurbished on now? I see pricing through the link Andy provided with pretty good discounts but will the go lower on Sunday? This is my first time and it's a bit confusing.

My problem is less on the cameras and more on the support for the NVR. We purchased a 4 camera+NVR system in 2021, and by 2023, it was already unsupported for updates. It has had issues downloading videos essentially from the start too, which is a huge issues when trying to use the video you make. I am not sure what they did (or didn't do) to their software, but I'm being told not to go with Reolink simply because they can't get it right.

Can anyone please comment on its software regarding person/car detection, etc? Without it, the system will send out a lot faults alarms.

I bought the below Reolink system with 12mp cameras at Costco for $600 around Christmas. Really happy with the cameras, nvr and software so far. Even at regular price I think it's a good deal.

You can adjust the sensitivity and even the size of objects that trigger alerts. It's not perfect, but I like it.
