October/November is the shoulder season and $650 should be about the average price.
Jan/Feb is definitely the off season (excluding chinese new year) and prices have historically been around $450 on zipair.
Singapore Air had a deal last month for Jan - Mar '25 for $7xx - some dates were still $7xx when I checked last week. I got a January '25 flight for $726 (plus $20/one way seat selection) - this includes 1 carry-on, 2 check-in (1 will be used for a bike at no add'l charge) plus meals.
Guess that deal is expensive for those who typically fly with zip air. Thing is with Japan, you always buy so much cool stuff, especially now with current exchange rate, that the check-in round trip luggage cost of $140 with zip air kinda kills their deals, unless it goes back to $4xx.

Other airlines basically start at $800 (cheapest is SQ at $792 in the dead of winter, which sucks unless you're going to ski).
ZIP is transitioning from fire sales to fill empty seats into attempting to actually make a profit. They switched to a seasonal schedule that prioritizes summer travel (when most people actually want to go to Japan).
If you can travel very light, this is a decent enough deal and likely the lowest price you'll see this season.
Checking a bag will add about $50-55 each way and in that case I'd strongly recommend looking at Singapore instead. SQ is more comfortable and has far superior service with the extras included.

Singapore has an excellent service but their 777s on SQ11/12 have older seats in them and even with a 32" pitch in economy, because those seats are older and bulkier, it feels like a less leg room than some of the newer planes with 31" pitch.
And forget AA as they started to charge for luggages on flights to Japan. One of the first legacy airliner to do that for a route to Japan other than the Zip, which is an LCC. Unless you're planning to travel with just a carry-on, I wouldn't recommend AA.
My recommendation is JAL or ANA as their service is excellent, seat pitch is 33/34 respectively so you have much more legroom. JAL is an inch lesser, but 10% wider seats (19 vs about 17.5 for traditional) than the rest because they eliminated 1 seat from a row.

There was free wifi but connection was horrible and couldn't connect half the time. Still a great deal for what I paid (somewhere around $4xx plus luggage) so don't regret.
