16GB is enough for all games, even in 2024. Recently Hardware Unboxed did a massive set of game testing at various ram configurations, with even far more powerful desktop processors and graphics cards and concluded the same. You may wanna check that out.

I might be missing something. I can't get it to same price. At Dell it's 1299 for 4060 laptop. Am I just not seeing it?

Acer had a 4080 last week for $12xx, so wondering if I should wait for that to come back or get this?

Factory Reconditioned one. That might come back but average price for that is around $1400 to $1500. If you're okay with Reconditioned product, that's a good deal.

16GB is more than enough for all the games right now. 32GB doesn't give you more FPS.

There may be handful of games that MIGHT benefit from 32GB to help make the game not lag. But if you really want 32GB, just upgrade it yourself and watch you'll never go over 12GB while gaming.

Of your into productivity then yes, opt for 32GB.

They did conclude 16GB in the desktop setting IIRC when you can DIY upgrade your ram easily. That advice was for the DIY setting and is not applicable for purchasing a soldered RAM laptop if you want future proofing. Unsure on the ram situation for this Alienware. Also it may lower your freedom to have other windows and processes open which some people care about instead of having a proverbial "clean room" for your game. I can see how people would want a 4070 laptop to have more RAM.

Video link: https://youtu.be/mklCPWNyJC0

edit: I remembered correctly that this was also the episode they extrapolated DDR4 experiences to DDR5 on why it made budgetary sense for the DIY scene to not go overboard with RAM. That's in the section at the end titled "AM4 DDR4 Lessons". Also look at "RAM Usage in 30+ Games" section, a lot of total system RAM with (I believe) a "clean room" setup is closing in on 16GB. He later cites 2 GB of ram used by discord + one chrome tab with 4k video so you'll be at the limit right now for a lot of games. As Windows, Chrome, and general applications gets even more greedy with your ram, you may notice performance drops in games that previously played fine. Probably just watch the video (and do additional research) instead of listening to me if you're going to make a $1000 purchase.

Based on this model at Dell's site, it is NOT soldered and is indeed upgradable.

If you do the Core 7 155, 16GB, 1TB, and select the per-key RGB backlit keyboard, it drops to $1,299. Selecting the per-key RGB is what dropped the price for me.

Edit: If you click "Free 2-day shipping" it dropped the price down to $1,199 for me. Cool

Also, the GPU (4070) is spaced on Dell's page to go up to a "Total performance power of 175w". To break that down, the Core 7 155H has a TDP of 28w but can boost to over 100w. I'd wager Dell has configured it to max at likely 40-60w leaving the most headroom for the GPU. But since 4060 and 4070 mobile GPUs don't benefit much at all from 100w+, it'll likely perform as good as anything at this spec point.

If you click the 2 day shipping, it changes the video card to 4060 and won't let you choose 4070 unless you also choose the Core 9 which bumps the price to $1399.
