🤷 ♂️ Feel like I might change batteries once a year, twice max with this model. It's not rechargeable but it's also not unreasonable. They have a rechargeable remote available separately if that's a problem for anybody.

$50 normal price for these? That seems steep. Do these come with remotes that eat batteries like crazy or did they fix that?

Roku sticks will not work with ethernet direct wired TV's. They only work with TV's using a wi-fi connection.
Huh?
What the TV is doesn't matter.
But Yes Roku sticks are WiFi only, and only the ultra's have wired nowadays.

I've had this model for years now. Does go through about 8 batteries a year. But never had a major issue with it. Even has AirPlay now.

I've been much happier once I replaced my old Roku ultra with the new one that has the rechargeable remote. My old ultra used to go through batteries fairly quickly. I realize this is not about the ultra version, but just sharing my experience with Roku.

Roku sticks work even if your TV doesn't have an internet connection at all -- I mean, that's what they're for (though of course they'll work on a smart TV too, as long as it has a HDMI port.)

That said, if you want to use the Roku app as a remote, your phone does need to be on the same network that the Roku is on, which means your phone needs to be on WiFi (as opposed to cellular data), and while it doesn't need to be the same WiFi that the Roku is on, they do all need to be on the same local network. But if you use the Roku remote, none of this is a concern.

(Some other Roku devices have ethernet ports, but the Roku stick devices don't that I know of.)

To be yet another stat: I bought a refurbished Roku device back in 2018 or 2019. For the first 2-3 years it wasn't used much (about an hour every couple of months), but for the last 3 years its been used frequently (at least an hour each day nearly every day (usually 2-3 hours on the weekends)). I replaced the batteries in the remote for the first time just a couple of months ago. (I replaced them with Eneloops, for what it's worth. We'll see how those go.)
