Best Buy's deal on 16GB / 512GB for $1249 is the better deal in my opinion unless you *really* want 256GB storage.
This is actually a pretty good deal. You must be new to apple products if the price jump for RAM upgrades shocks you. That's just how they price their products. With that in mind, this is a good deal and if you use icloud and/or an external HD, you could make it work.
The Amazon deal for the 16GB / 512 SSD for $1249 is probably a better deal especially if you have a card that gives you 5% back on Amazon.

Hold out for a better deal. The M3/8GB/256GB config is only $850 on Amazon. You are paying an whopping $250 just for an 8GB RAM upgrade with no upgrade in storage. Not worth it.

This is a good price for this model, it's $100 less than the edu price, but if you're an Apple person, you get a $150 gift card with the edu purchase via Apple.

No, I understand how Apple upgrades work. I still think that it's too much for *just* a RAM upgrade on a relative scale. Either settle for the base config while it's on a deep sale now, or - just like someone rightfully pointed out above - sping another $150 to get *both* the RAM and the storage upgraded.

It's shortsighted to spend this much and settle for "you could make it work". But whatever: that's just my unpopular opinion.

No, you don't understand how MacBook Air upgrades work. When you go from base to base + 16GB memory, you also go from 8-core to 10-core GPU. Still an expensive upgrade, but 25% more GPU cores can be significant depending on the use.

Also, just because your uses may make 256GB of storage painful, that doesn't mean the same is true for others. What's a slick deal for others may not be a slick deal for you.

Many of us already have plenty of thumb/external drives or cloud storage, so the idea of paying an additional $150 for another 256GB of storage is even more Apple-outrageous than the RAM upgrade. In that case, this deal is the sweet spot for someone who doesn't want to settle for the 8GB RAM but also doesn't need a large internal drive.

The 8gb M3 is $850 so $250 for a 8gb ram upgrade is a ripoff

All Apple products are a rip-off. They didn't get to being in the top 3 most valuable companies by operating on slim margins.

The EDU price is still better direct from Apple. Remember that anyone can use the education discount, they don't check and it's just a checkbox you click. You get $150 off the MSRP and another $150 Apple gift card. Plus Applecare is 20% off at $159 which is not available with the BH deal.

If you combine the 3% with the Apple Card, that makes the EDU deal way ahead.

You also get more GPU cores with the 16GB model.

I don't see this as a spec option (16gb ram & 256gb ssd) on apple's website. Am I missing something?
