Not a bad price - the last time I bought the 5500 it was $117 in July 2023, however I had to return it due to the whining noise.

Was having issues with waking up in middle of night coughing occasionally months back and found at times it was cat hair (was getting warmer and cats started shedding, we have 3 of them). Decided to get 1 of these for our master bedroom and since then have never had a coughing episode again (been 2 full months now with it running). Clean out the pre-filter every 2 weeks and shocked every time how much dust and cat hair it does actually catch. They recommend cleaning the carbon filter every 3 months which I will do next month (rinse it out) and replace the HEPA filter every 12 months.

How is this any better than the Costco ones that come with more filters or the refurbished ones for half price? Other than the sleek black color?

It's a blower fan that forces air through filters, there's nothing magical about these things. It works fine but it has "soft" on/off switch so not good for hooking up to a smart plug for automation.

I bought 3 of these at $159.99 a few months ago after a terrible allergy season made it so we would wake up unable to breath through our noses. The "air quality" sensor is very sensitive. I keep meaning to post a review on Amazon, as these are essentially fart detectors, as proven by my kids. I have 3 throughout the house, 1 outside kid rooms, 1 inside our bedroom, and one in the family room. I usually keep them running 24/7 at either 1 or 2 speed, which goes up to 4. At 1, it is nearly silent. Overall I think they help with the air quality. We have 3 cats and the pre-filters continually fill up with cat hair that otherwise would be in the air or carpet.

I originally bought a Winix filter because my old office was dusty, and I kept coughing until I got the Winix. Then I got two cats, so I Winix filters for my house. The pre-filters catch the hair and litter, which is gross if you think about it. Anyway, I recommend it for pet owners. I still need to vacuum religiously to get the hair and litter out of everything but it makes me calmer to see that stuff getting filtered out.

PSA ; NO Remote Control. I bought this last week, and even though it says it is remote control, and they have a remote in the manual. And Amazon say it is remote in the top description, and bottom page comparison (but when you look at the middle 'feature listing' section it say 'control hand'. seems Winix has stopped packing remotes with model, I tried Amazon customer service , of course they did not really understand, and just offered a replacement / refund. I specifically paid about $20 for remote control (my other winix has it, and I like that I can crank up while gone.). I finally wound up calling Winix directly and they told me oh they do not do remotes anymore, and that was all there was to it, pretty bad experience imho. they basically said take it up with Amazon. that being said it is still a great unit , just no remote. I might return mine and save $25 on this one
