Correct yes. I made this mistake already. My xbox is behind my TV so it doesn't work.

Did you find a remote that will work? I'm in the same boat.

I have not, I haven't looked super in depth but the ones I've found are IR only.

FYI, the sync button is the actual IR receiver on the Series X. Not sure if you're able to get a line of sight to that button if there's a slight gap somewhere you can poke it out from.

Otherwise, I saw someone say you can use the xbox phone app as a remote on Reddit, never tried that

Wish this had a keyboard on the back of it like Vizio remote. Will this work with an IR Blaster like Logitech smart hub?

Ya, XBOX Smartglass I think it's called. Worked fine for me when I used it.

The controllers work fine though, so this is mostly an aesthetic thing as to why you would want a remote. Unless maybe you don't want your family breaking or grotying up your $60 controller while they're snacking and watching the tube.

There's some decent quality of life benefits with a media remote, especially if you watch a lot of blu rays or stream a lot of movies.

Most TVs can be controlled over HDMI now, so it's nice to be able to adjust volume and mute with dedicated buttons through the xbox instead of switching to my tv remote or using the hidden volume controls in the xbox menu.

It's also nice to have dedicated fast forward, skip, play/pause buttons so I don't have to remember what face or shoulder button to hit.

The remote doesn't turn off after a few minutes like the standard controller does, easier to pause something right away. just small benefits that add up

Controllers kill batteries when they sit there on, and shut off when they sit idle while watching shows and you keep having to turn it back on. The IR blaster remote batteries last basically forever and it never actually turns on or off.

Penalty is the line of sight. Honestly though, for me, it's really frustrating and I often end up using the controller rather than fuss with uncovering the sensor. Kid puts little toy cars everywhere.

Lots of tvs can control it with the TV remote through the TV, no sight needed. My LG did it without extra programming. See if the TV "control center" kinda thing supports it.
