Cheapest I've seen it. Beats the $1699 price at Best Buy and ASus eShop by ~$200...! Prime Day pricing...I know it wasn't this price 15 hours ago, so it must have just dropped....

This was $1699 yesterday, in line with Best Buy. Today it drops another 10%. This is the cheapest it has been. If only there was an adapter to expand its compatibility...

it's a good deal, however with the Ally X lacking the XG Mobile port I wonder if ASUS will support this even in their own hardware moving forward.

Ordered one. Yesterday I was incredibly exited because I scored an Open Box - excellent for $1580 from Best Buy, but now that is going to be returned since they only Price Match items that are New.

At this point just build a Mini ITX with a portable monitor bolted to the case. Same price as this + laptop but you can have a 4080 and a desktop processor. This product is for niche users or users with more money than sense.

$1499 for a laptop grade 4090 is kinda rough, considering you'll also need an Ally or Flow series laptop to use it. It performs similarly to a desktop 4070Ti, which you can cram into a mini ITX and call it a day, but some people just love the idea of portability and would love to pay big price, which I totally understand and respect.

Actually this one is faster for those who have a ROG Ally or a ROG Flow X13, X16, or Z13. It connects directly to the motherboard which allows way faster speeds than through a Thunderbolt 4 port. Additionally, running an external GPU through the same port that laptops tend to charge from, ends up causing several issues and headaches that I am sure most people would rather avoid. An external GPU makes total sense for laptops that have separate Thunderbolt 4 ports and charging ports. However, you are still looking at the additional costs of buying the external enclosure, the PSU, and the desktop GPU. Combining this with the ROG Ally, which is the weakest of the laptops I mentioned, matches in performance a high end laptop with a 4090 for the same price. This xG 4090 is also a fully powered mobile 4090, which places it at least on par with a desktop 4070Ti on performance. If we compare this 4090 XG mobile to a desktop 4090 both connected to a laptop, this mobile outperforms the desktop 4090 due to Thunderbolt 4 limitations. Basically, if you want the best possible graphics on a laptop, this is the way to go.

On the price side, this is technically slightly more expensive than a desktop with a 4070Ti. You can get a ROG Ally (non extreme) for $300 now. You get the added benefit of this being portable as you said, or even being able to leave the GPU behind and still have a handheld with you. In this case, the only downside is the lack of upgradability on the RAM side more than anything else. You cannot forget however, that you compared a 4070Ti connected to the desktop motherboard directly. When you go and try using it through a Thunderbolt 4 connection, you have a significant performance hit due to bandwidth limitations, which means that this XG Mobile outperforms the desktop 4070Ti with no issues if you were to connect the 4070Ti to a laptop.

It's actually cheaper to purchase this and a ROG Ally than to build a Mini ITX desktop as you mentioned.

I have the non-z1e version of the Ally and the CPU is okay at best, and you'll be heavily CPU bottlenecked when playing any high FPS game so that begs for a better CPU variant of Ally/Flow laptops, which can push our mini itx budghet to 4080 or above territory, or a nice high-refresh rate portable monitor and some peripherals. I can definitely see the charm of the XGM because I used to have a 3080 one, but still a tough pillow to swallow in the name of portability

I have an Ally but I think I'd rather just upgrade to the Ally X and get the OneXGPU dock with the radeon 7600 for 600 bucks. I play portable 90% of the time so I'd rather have the upgraded device first and foremost.

It's a good deal now, but I bet these drop like a rock since the Ally X can use any eGPU
