17oz seems kind of small if you're brewing for more than one person

Yeah, they make it turn white by running 1500 watts through it. That white hot heat also ensures the coffee stays at the right temperature. Super high end stuff. LMAO

This is exactly right. I have the bodum 34oz version of this, and it brews just enough for two mugs worth. 17oz will be strictly one person's coffee unless you drink really small mugs. Its not that it makes 17oz its that the WHOLE THING is 17oz top to bottom, you can only make about 8oz at a time in this vs about 16 easily in the larger version. The larger version is also only $19 so its not like a big trade off.

What's the difference between this and a standard $20 programmable coffee maker?

To give you a not snarky reply, it's "better" but also you do need more gear than a programmable coffee maker. People that are buying this typically have a grinder that is more expensive than $20, a not in-expensive gooseneck kettle, and a scale. It's also a lot more effort than a simply drip feed or pod coffee maker.

It's all about giving your coffee grounds a more even brewing time than the funneling you see in cheaper coffee makers (as in the coffee after you're done looks like a funnel for water) that makes this difference.

If you're happy with what you have, just drink what you have.

Good reply. I made the mistake of buying a pour over setup (Kalita Wave) and now I have more coffee appliances than my wife would prefer. Not only that, your expectations for coffee go up.

more recently I've found the aero press XL and my life has forever been changed.

Bottom line is the biggest change you can make to your coffee brewing is to buy a good burr grinder.
