What protocol do you want? Bluetooth? Zigbee? ZWave? Some random 433Mhz sequence?

There are plenty of other switches available that handle other protocols, including X10 which is verging on being 40 years old.

If you're bucking WiFi for being inadequate, slow or unreliable, it's not the protocol — it's your router.

Is there a difference in reliability between the two?

Would also like to know the true answer to this...

Currently have several (14) kasa devices and 3 tapo cams...they all seem to work the same/have the same functionality via the tapo app

Apparently TAPO switches can only be setup online, while KASA switches can be setup and used offline. The whole point of these light switches is the smart functionality, so overall there isn't any major difference.

I don't think so. These are matter compatible. So you just scan the barcode. No need to login.

You have that backwards.

TAPO is Matter compatible, giving you far more offline capabilities than KASA started with.

Thread would be preferable for a Matter device. There really isn't much reason for a light switch to use Wifi and consume more electricity and clog up your wifi network.
