Please don't actually run/train in these shoes. They are $17 for a reason. You may use them for walking the neighborhood leisurely with the wife, mowing, and or weekend around the house activities. Everyone loves a good dealio, but you'll have to invest more than $17 on yourself (feet) if you expect to do any real running/training.
I don't think a single example 70 years ago is the 'gotcha' you think it is. Especially when that runner started wearing shoes the next Olympics and won again. Barefoot running is an injury waiting to happen.

Let's just get out in front of this now.

I agree. Everything starts at your feet, and poor shoes just amplify issues up the body. Be nice to your feet.
I did buy these shoes, but not for running. Just bopping around town.

Yep. Don't tell that to the barefoot Olympic winner and others winning marathons....

Bad shoes can f up your spine much worse than no shoes at all
I haven't worn Avia's in a while but when I did I swear they were worse than bare feet. Very rigid. Spend a little more and get the budget Asics or New Balance.
I tried this model on. And they're actually more comfortable than my Air Max 95. For $12 I couldn't complaint. Solid new work shoes to stand around in with compression socks or sleeves!
I bought two pairs of Avias about 10 years ago during a sale when they were super cheap, and because the colrways looked so good (black/blue, blue/green). I couldn't even wear them to work for walk in before putting my boots on, as they were so bad. No cushioning at all, and not enough room for inserts. One pair remains new in box. They were cheap though. Full disclosure, my feet always hurt, so if you have painless feet, these might be an option. But be warned 😄
