Fans do not cool air. They move air.

If you are intaking cooler air at a specific CFM then it needs an exit point that allows that volume of air to be moved out.

If you are intaking cooler air (at night) it can lower the temperature of the space assuming that interior space is warmer then the cooler air.

Air flow is about moving heat from a thermal mass (your house) to outside of your living space.

It's typically why whole house fans are located in an attic space that allows cooler intake air to pass through your house to the highest / hottest part of your house. The benefit of the attic fan is that air passing over insulation that has collected radiant heat will have air moving over it and should speed up the transfer of heat to outside your living space.

A room fan is a poor substitute to use as an exhaust as it will normally move air around the room. A transom fan will allow intake and exhaust but normally not the most effective spot. With a transom fan you are sacrificing effectiveness for removability.

The vornado transom fan is the highest cfm fan you will find vs a dedicated window fan like an air king 9166/9155.

An attic fan is the most effective located to move cool air from outside to inside your house.
It's also more costly to purchase and requires installation.

Hope that helps.
FYI: The manual says that this model cannot be used vertically. Also, squirrel cage fans like this usually make a lot of noise if they're at the higher settings because they run at very high RPMs. That creates high-frequency white noise, which I find far more annoying than the low-frequency white noise that ordinary fans create.

BTW, the Home Depot link is showing $99.99 for me.
If you don't need it right away I would wait, Costco has had this on sale twice for $59.99 last couple months, they may do it again.

When these are off will they let the outside climate in? Can I keep them installed in window at all times? Thanks

Used this but had to return. Good for a small room but not enough speed/power to exhaust or intake more than that. Does have smart integration which is a plus. So might depend on your usage. It's very quiet compared to other window fans I have used but I feel that's more because it doesn't have enough power..

Did you have another window open to exhaust or intake the air based on your situation?

Most of the user reviews where they felt the device was under powered is due to positive pressure within the house. As modern houses tend to be airtight without a different source to bring in or remove air these window fans tend to create positive air pressure in a house and the fan will have reduced capacity.

The fan on Max setting has ~1300 cfm which is quite high. Most window transom fans have significantly lower cfm. Recently the Shaper Image was posted on Slickdeals and it has a max of ~ 600 cfm.

User posted the video above where the YouTuber has good experiences with fans and mentions pressurized homes and reduced fan effectiveness.

Are window fans supposed to be able to actually change a room's temp or is it just moving air around?

I got a basic window fan from Home Depot and tried it for a few days, and it "feels" cool when using it, but doesn't actually reduce the room temp.

I've run it in both the exhaust side as well as intake. It's about 80F+ in the bedroom I tried it in after a hot day, outside at night it's in the mid to low 60s, and running the fan for a few hours only drops the room's actual temp by a few degrees – basically the same as if when there was no fan with window left open. I have all windows in the house open to create airflow as well.

I read some inconclusive articles/comments online about whether fans can actually change the room temp.

Fans create wind chill, not lower temps. If your room is warmer than outside the exhaust mode would cool the room down by removing hot air. If your room is cooler than outside you don't want to draw warm air in.

But a fan running in a room by itself will increase the room due to the motor creating heat as fans don't cool, only simulate cooling with wind chill.

As an example.

I have a vornado fan in a west window room that that 20*10 and the day temperature is 77 in the room. With an outside temp at night in the low 60's the fan can get the temperature in the morning to 67.

In an adjoining room with a midea ushaped ac running on high fan (no cooling ) a room with similar conditions 10*10 is only able to get to ~72 by morning.

The cfm of the midea unit is ~300 CFM.

Airflow really matters.

Would this be a good choice to put in a Florida garage window? The garage gets VERY hot during the day with the door down and I'd like to exhaust the garage air in the there with the outside air.

Any thoughts?
