Costco and Sam's have been membership only for ages, but they're putting more and more previously free services (like shipping) behind paywalls. I'm afraid someday you won't be able to shop online at large retailers without paying for a membership.
I assume stores love the subscription fees revenue and have done the math that by withholding services (some of which used to be free) that enough people will use the services less than the yearly subscription fee so they can make a profit. It reminds me of how mail in rebates used to count on enough people forgetting to redeem the rebates, and subscription services count on enough people not using the service enough so they can make a profit.
Sadly this has been the trend for years. Target jumped on board recently. Walmart has Walmart+.
