The story was good for me, not sure why there are complaints. It isn't going to blow your socks off but it's still pretty solid. I also really liked the main characters in your party and the optional side conversations were nice.
Combat is subjective but chaining combos was satisfying to me. The only complaint I had regarding the story was the villain who is a little lackluster.

Thanks for the info. I haven't played this one yet, but I enjoy the older Tales of games.

Unfortunately, I also must disagree on this one looking nicer. It may at first, but once you really scrutinize it, environments start to feel very samey, like pregenerated and too symmetrical assets, almost. There isn't a lot of soul, just a lot of cold, superficially pretty but otherwise boring environments.
It's okay, but it's a very by-the-numbers JRPG that is more concerned with eye candy than substance.
Vesperia is on sale a lot and has far more lovingly crafted environments. I'd personally recommend it as a great example of the Tales series.
Berseria is all right, but it sort of signaled the downfall of the franchise aesthetically for me. Too many boring, perfect walls, empty fields, and blase settings. Arise pretended to make up for it by relying on an external engine to make up for the lack of artistic care.
... Er, I guess this isn't a video game forum, so that's enough ranting from me, haha.
