This is a good deal. I bought the touch screen version two weeks ago. It came promptly, and I liked it for what little I used it. I bought the grade A refurb and the laptop was definitely a bit beat (cosmetic only I thought), but I didn't care, it was a lot for cheap.

Unfortunately it kept crashing itself due to the thermal sensor reading "unsafely high temperatures", especially when plugged into the charger. Dell diagnostics ran fine, I contacted support, and after some effort learned I had a 100 day warranty on the refurb.

Currently waiting to hear a replacement has been sent my way as I still need the thing, I've already sent back my original unit. Whole process has delayed me getting a functional laptop by a few weeks already. Just fyi to anyone considering riding the Dell refurb train. Call "Dell Financial Services"/"Dell Refurbished" to initiate a claim. Live chat on their site was for new products and said mine was out of warranty.

*Update: Dell received my return, and apparently had no replacement units, so they just refunded me. Probably not going to bother rolling the dice again.

You should always check whether the corporate warranty was still active on it, as they are for many of these XX20 units. If so, you could have had onsite service to replace the motherboard or whatever else needed fixing.

These are generally good machines, and the are quite generous with their replacement policy. If you call and they don't have the same one in stock, if you ask nicely they often will give you a similar machine with as-good, or better specs.

Well "i7" is a misnomer. I5's and Ryzen 5 's from the same time period (4 years ago) had 12 threads. This CPU has 8.
the amount of ram paired with this trash cpu is absurd

Not absurd. It's good for programming (where you run a bunch of docker containers) but it's unable to drive a 4k60 monitor. So it's good to be a server only.

These latitudes run hot. Fan kicks in quickly and you can feel some throttling every once in a while. I think the older dell precisions had better thermals than these.

I got 32GB for the refurb 5410 around same price earlier this year. Been using it as my side laptop next to my regular workFromHome corporate laptop so i can check gmail (since they block!) n browse internet/news. It's nice, I even did a 6 week AI course on it (running it very slowly off cpu since no nvidia hehe). using Ubuntu installed on it but original Windows still there too on the boot menu. perfectly fine for running VSCode to program.

I would pay $600 if they got some nicer nvidia laptops in the future, but might need to wait around Thanksgiving time for 50% those maybe. think I see more touchscreen deals vs nvidia deals on DellRefurb site

The bios on the 5420s were sketch when they came out a couple years ago. Mine had all sorts of audio and video trouble. It took a good year of bios updates to get it to act right.

Imho, more uses than programming. This config is sufficient to concurrently run a couple of 'modest' demand vm's (in addition to the laptop's OS). This makes it a nice alternative to work in various OS's, plus for local cybersecurity cyber range exercises. In these cases, you'll want to bump the 512GB to 1TB.

Yeah I found plenty of tales of the same when I was troubleshooting. Did a bios update and made sure the fan and vents were clear and clean. Unfortunately it still just wanted to cook itself lol

Would the 7420 be good for a middle/high school kid? Video calls, homework, youtube/netflix, and maybe some Roblox.

USB optical drives are like $20 on Amazon. I keep one in my office just in case, but I don't bother to keep it with me for the once-a-year uses.

I did check this actually, the Dell service tag turned up as "warranty expired" and my only
option was to get a repair quote or purchase a new warranty (even though I had one thru Dell Refurbished). I did call, and explain the situation. Support rep was quick to issue an RMA, and when I asked about a replacement they said they had identical replacements in stock and would reserve one for me. I said equivalent or greater would be fine, they assured me they had equivalent. Once they received the return I was simply sent an email stating they had no replacements in stock and had issued a refund (no asking me if I'd be okay with another unit). Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm sorry to hear that it played out this way. In my experience, they would place an order that would be awaiting release upon the return of my unit and that would show up in my account. Once they would receive the problematic unit, they'd release the shipment. I always used customer service over the phone to arrange this and they'd process the replacement order while I was on the phone.
