DOT regulations:
* No more than 90 pounds total in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* No more than 45 pounds in a single cylinder in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* Up to 1,000 pounds in an open bed pickup truck or trailer. (Has to be open, not enclosed).
* No special driver license needed, just a regular driver license.
In addition to DOT regulations:
* Most places will only fill a 100 pound cylinder if it is in a secure and upright position. Tied down with rope or strapped in the pickup bed. Not unsecured and rolling/moving around.
So, to haul around a 100 pound tank; just need a regular driver license, a pickup truck or open trailer, and some kind of way to secure the tank.
No sure why the downvote, I assume you're telling him that it's actually as simple as that (not being an ass). That is how I found the couple of companies locally that do it.
I looked into this at one point, for a propane generator that connects to twin cylinders, to use during power outages. Was going to get a pair of 100 pound cylinders.
I wound up going with several Flame King 30 and 40 pound cylinders instead (Costco, Walmart). 30 and 40 pound is a good size, a lot more capacity than BBQ size cylinders, and much easier to deal with filling them compared to 100 pounders. 30's and 40's you can actually throw them in your car and carry them when full and fairly easily move them around by yourself. With 100's, you are going to need a pickup, a helper, a dolly, have to heft them up into the bed of the truck, and a bottle of Advil for your back, etc. Not fun.
But if you are using them on a shop/garage heater with no natural gas hookup, they're awesome because they last a lot longer. I may grab one as a backup so I don't have to go every 6 weeks (because like you said, it's a pain)

Yep. Where you can get propane (refills, specifically) is going to vary based on your location, and local ordinances/laws... Can't really just tell someone to go to Ace Hardware because not all locations do it. For me, I've got a mom and pop place that does it cheaper than any of the bigger stores.
But yeah, thanks for the downvotes, folks 🙄 I wasn't being a jerk - it's literally the best possible answer because it depends where you are.
Damn that's a big tank. What yall doing with something this big?! How do you even safely transport it? 🤔
During beryl no power for 8 days and ran out of propane for my generator. Also ran out of gas because no gas station had power to operate. My generator uses about 20lbs of propane a day.
Yes. Local RV dealers usually have a guy that does it on a schedule (like he's there the first Thursday of the month). If that doesn't get you there, places that do fire extinguishers at commercial places sometimes are able to do tanks as well- so when your in a local shop check the tag on the extinguisher and give them a call. If you're in a place where they come fill your tank for heating, they usually do it for you.
As long as the tank visually looks fine and they can check that the valve is functional, for $20-$30 the tank gets a brand new start date.
Second all the comment on how difficult these are to move around, the 40lb tanks are way better imho. If you are going to get multiple tanks this size you might as well get a 120 gallon fat boy (4xxlbs) and just have the propane delivered
I don't know states rules or anything. If they actually test it or replace parts then you're good for 10 years. If they just do a visual inspection you are good for 5... and you may not be able to do more than a couple visuals in a row... RV shop should have all the details.

Now I have two 100lb tank as backup.
Might not be a bad idea to get a solar + battery/inverter setup if you can afford it.. never hurts to have some redundancy / extra backup capability.
I'm moving to NH and need to get a generator. I wanted to run the generator off propane rather than gas, would this be big enough to last a couple of days power outage? And I see other comments about winter proof propane, is this a feature of the tank I have to look out for?

Any place that fills the smaller tanks will fill these. I bought two of these from Costco last time they were this price . I had to take them to my home propane supplier to get a special valve put on them so the guy that truck delivers for my big house tank will refill them. I paid 2.14 a gallon just yesterday for the bulk delivery. 311.1 gallons for 694 (including 10.99 "fuel surcharge" and 15.99 "hazmat" fee.
I have these two as emergency backup fir the main tank.
Slick dealers should know that propane is always cheapest in July. So with my 500 gallon tank i should have enough until next year this time.
Years ago, propane trucks woukd fill yer BBQ tanks, now they refuse. They have all kind of excuses "dont have the adaptor" "liability not allowed anymore" "tank must be certain size" "wrong valve" etc c etc
I took all those excuses away and now I can get the two costco tanks filled AND my 500 gallon house tank!
2.14 a gallon is a screamin slick deal at Ferrel Gas with farm bureau discount!
Edit: Thanks for the downvotes, but this is a perfectly legit (non-smartass) answer; where you can get propane (refills, specifically) is going to vary based on your location, and local ordinances/laws.
Currently $189.
I don't think they meant "where to refill". They meant how to get it done, this thing is huge and heavy. What's the best way to get it refilled. Doesn't seem easy.
My local warehouse doesn't sell tanks at all, but would love to get one from Costco. Where are you located? $46 is a fantastic price considering they're at least $60 everywhere else.
10-15$ of fb marketplace. If old swap for a new certified one at Lowe's for $22 with 15lb of propane.

I made a simple brace for my truck out of 2x4s that secured the bottom of the tank. I use four straps to secure the top.

That is a great tip. I have a duel fuel generator and never thought about the fact that propane doesn't go bad.
