DOT regulations:
* No more than 90 pounds total in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* No more than 45 pounds in a single cylinder in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* Up to 1,000 pounds in an open bed pickup truck or trailer. (Has to be open, not enclosed).
* No special driver license needed, just a regular driver license.

In addition to DOT regulations:
* Most places will only fill a 100 pound cylinder if it is in a secure and upright position. Tied down with rope or strapped in the pickup bed. Not unsecured and rolling/moving around.

So, to haul around a 100 pound tank; just need a regular driver license, a pickup truck or open trailer, and some kind of way to secure the tank.

Costco used to do, but I found tractor supply will purge and fill charge by gallon like Costco did.

I keep a couple full to run a dual fuel generator in case of emergency. Petrol will spoil over time. Propane keeps indefinitely.

I made a simple brace for my truck out of 2x4s that secured the bottom of the tank. I use four straps to secure the top.

What is th ebest way to get these filled?
Almost any hardware store will do it but they check the date codes on the tank to make sure it is current or recertified. Having said that, Ace Hardware, Menards, local drive through might all fill your tank if they have a larger tank on the premises.

In true Costco fashion, they don't sell 20lb tanks, they sell 100lb tanks.

I remember a few years ago I was going to buy one at Lowes when they were around $115, but I waited. Then they shot up to $225. Now they are currently $189, and I still don't own one yet. Frown

I know you're joking, but just so everyone knows, the 20lb tanks are $46 as of my recent visit.

Probably a dolly and stake bed truck so you can strap it, but moving that much propane in one tank might require a CDL or certification to be legal.

Illegally, you might be able to get U-Haul to fill it and then rent one of their mover vans.

Whatever you do, don't try to transport it horizontally.

The safest bet is to buy this tank as a permanent fixture and either pay for a mobile fill service or use smaller tanks with a transfer valve.

My local warehouse doesn't sell tanks at all, but would love to get one from Costco. Where are you located? $46 is a fantastic price considering they're at least $60 everywhere else.

Try their website.

California has them on the shelf from early April all the way to practically October, but they aren't always sitting with the rest of the outdoor items.

One of the stores I go to even keeps the smoker pellets in the back next to the toilet paper.

Do you have to get these recertified after 10-12 years like the 25 gallon size?
Yes. Local RV dealers usually have a guy that does it on a schedule (like he's there the first Thursday of the month). If that doesn't get you there, places that do fire extinguishers at commercial places sometimes are able to do tanks as well- so when your in a local shop check the tag on the extinguisher and give them a call. If you're in a place where they come fill your tank for heating, they usually do it for you.

As long as the tank visually looks fine and they can check that the valve is functional, for $20-$30 the tank gets a brand new start date.

The mixup is in confusing 100 pound tanks with 100 gallon tanks (obviously, if one was sitting in front of you, there would be no confusion.)

MENARD's does propane refill by the LBS, so that would be a good place to stop by.

I looked into this at one point, for a propane generator that connects to twin cylinders, to use during power outages. Was going to get a pair of 100 pound cylinders.

I wound up going with several Flame King 30 and 40 pound cylinders instead (Costco, Walmart). 30 and 40 pound is a good size, a lot more capacity than BBQ size cylinders, and much easier to deal with filling them compared to 100 pounders. 30's and 40's you can actually throw them in your car and carry them when full and fairly easily move them around by yourself. With 100's, you are going to need a pickup, a helper, a dolly, have to heft them up into the bed of the truck, and a bottle of Advil for your back, etc. Not fun.
