You don't need to have any faith, there is no refurbishing that goes on. They blank the drives, some sellers blank the stats, and then they resell them. No 3rd party is opening up drives to do any true refurbishing.
You are simply buying used drives....... which is fine, I don't trust anyone to open a helium drive anyway.

4 years is nothing for enterprise drives, especially since they probably spent most of that 4 years continuously powered on (power cycles cause more damage to spinning rust than anything else). The manufacturer MTBF on these drives is 2.5 million hours, or approximately 385 years. I promise you, even after having been used for 4 years, they are probably more reliable than any brand new consumer drive you can buy today.

WD usually resells most of its recertified enterprise drives through resellers who then provide the warranty (and charge significantly more than $75). At least this seller offers a 5 year warranty which they have a good reputation for honoring.

I'm considering purchasing 3-5 of them myself for use in building a new NAS/Proxmox box.

It's a special alloy, same kind of stuff that used in satellites and keeps freon in refrigerants.

WD put out a cool blog post a couple years ago on the development of helium filled drives. They've been in development for 30+ years.

The Synology site says the following Ultrastars are compatible with my DS214+

HUH721212ALE600
HUH721212ALE604
HUH721010ALE600
HUH721010ALE600

However, this one is a HUH721212ALE601

Are these drives that different that I wouldn't be able to use the HUH721212ALE601 it in my 214+?

Thank you

Would this be a good way to test?
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Full format in Windows
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Do a full read/write/verify (badblocks -wsv -b 4096 /dev/sda)?
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Quick format in Windows
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Fill drive (cat /dev/zero > /dev/device)?

The badblocks command will go through 4 iterations of writing a different pattern to the entire drive and reading it back. I think the last pattern is zeroes, so essentially duplicating "cat /dev/zero > /dev/device". You can view SMART data in linux with smartmontools. In Ubuntu/Debian, install it with "sudo apt install smartmontools". Run the command "smartctl -a /dev/sda" to view the stats. The raw values of reallocated and pending sectors should stay at 0 for a healthy drive.
