This isn't a crazy high quality rig, with only 3 total bearings in the spinning reel (still better than only the one some ultra cheap reels have), but it is decent for lightweight freshwater fishing. Nice for panfish, trout and smaller species. I've taken tons of smallmouth bass up to 2ish lbs on 6lb line, but you have to play the fish until it tires out and you can't just horse them in like you could on a larger rig. Shorter rods like this are very popular for ice fishing and fishing from kayaks. And, it's the free shipping that makes this deal, IMHO. Enjoy, and take a kid fishing.

Here is a good article on fishing rod weight and actions. [wired2fish.com]
Here's one on spinning reel sizes. [curated.com] A spinning reel is my advice for someone who wants to keep their fishing easy, but here is a good article explaining different types of reels. [fishingbooker.com]
I'd probably grab a more general use rod in the 5.5'-6.5' range if this will be your only rod and you don't specifically need a shorty like this one.
This Ugly Stick combo from the other thread is a great rod that would catch most freshwater species. Otherwise, Walmart usually has decent deals in the $25-$35 range. Try to shop name brands, and look to see how many ball bearings are built into the reel. More usually means better quality and a smoother working reel. As always, check the reviews.
You can spend a ton of money on top quality rods for different kinds of fishing and even for the style of lure you want to throw and how you want to work it. But, an inexpensive setup will work just great for most recreational fishermen. I'm a pretty avid fresh and saltwater shore fisherman (I'm too poor to own a fishing boat) and the most I've ever dropped on a single rod and reel was about $70, and that was a lot for me. You just don't need to spend that much to go fishing.
Have fun and take a kid fishing!
