Pcpartpicker can handle making sure parts will fit and are compatible with each other. As far if they work in Linux I can't comment.
It's honestly hard to throw together a pc and have something not work under Linux now a days. Device/driver support has substantially improved as has stability under most modern Linux distros.

The quirks still lie in proprietary non standardized peripherals, so if you're doing audio engineering or using something enterprise-y there be dragons.

Edit: mostly, the only obstacle to building a pc now a days is just making sure the parts work with each other (chipset + CPU, parts fitting in the case, etc). Pcpartpicker is an amazing tool. Also, solid state drives are amazing! If you haven't experienced one yet, it's 1000% worth the money to buy a good one.

I haven't built a computer in 15yrs. What's the best way to find compatible parts for a Linux build?

Linus tech tips did a 30 day Linux challenge and they documented their challenges. I hear a lot of people in the Linux community say to get an amd radeon GPU because nvidia driver support is really hard to work with

What do you plan to do with this computer?

Some Linux people here upset I said nvidia GPUs aren't the most reliable I see lol. For people getting into Linux and aren't experts there are some distros that just don't play nicely with them and how is someone who is new to Linux to know which distro is the best or not? Especially with various hardware components? I think the LTT video is a great example of people who have some experience with Linux but committed to it full time and documenting their challenges. There's several linux reaction videos to this series and even they admitted the same challenges they ran into.

If you're not opposed to proprietary drivers and plan to run Ubuntu or a derivative of Ubuntu, it's really hard to find compatibility problems these days. Usually it's sound or video issues.

That being said, run your build through PC Parts Picker to identify potential problems and then run searches for your parts and a qualifier like "(your chosen distro) problems."

The sound chips have been the same for over 10y (probably 20+).. if you have compatibility issues, your doing something wrong, lol

Just about everything now is compatible with Linux. If you get a video card get an AMD card. AMD released open source drivers and they are baked in the linux kernel. Nvidia cards use a community supported driver, there's no official open source driver for their cards on linux.

This is a decent CPU. Keep in mind this cpu only supports PCIE 3.0. But the jump from PCIE 3.0 to 4.0 isnt much, maybe just a few frames. Performance is pretty close to the 5600. I have both cpus and not seeing much difference.

Basically a 3600X in performance. Not bad, and a worthy upgrade to any Zen quad core system.

Since the performance of 3600x and the performance of this 5500 are about the same.

And Ryzen 5 3600X is about $65 at Aliexpress.

For me, this Ryzen 5 5500 got to be $59.99 or cheaper to make sense.

I believe the 5500 doesn't support pcie gen 4. But the ryzen 3600 does. Neither one has an integrated GPU

This is an old proc. Should be less than $50 at this point.

Interestingly enough, AMD may not give the generational improvements with each series for long as they lost Jim Keller. Wherever he goes, the lead in semiconductors follows.

Yeah, I have both, and this is a great budget build base (I have a RX 570 gpu).

If you have a PCIe 4.0 main board and Video board, think about paying the extra for a R5 5600x:

Oh, and if you have Microcenter, this chip is $80:

In light of the release of the Ryzen 9000 series, I see why they are still releasing AM4 CPUs.

One reviewer explained Zen 5 spanks in server applications. The non-x3d chips are failed epyc chiplets passed on to the DIY market. A sound business strategy but we'll see if it works.

Is this really an upgrade to my current 2600x I am using now?
Seems to do everything I need fast enough, don't think I will really gain anything with it.
