Nowadays I usually get travel esim and because my phone is Android I use one of those popular travel router runs OpenWRT to tether and share my network to other devices.
The setup is a little clumsy on the move, I admit, but my life is much easier without dealing with physical sim and one less device to charge.( I power my travel router with adapter or power bank).

T-Mobile recently stopped allowing my iPad mini to work with a voice SIM. *sigh*
So now my free voice line goes in an old phone that acts as a full-time hotspot.

Also, the device has 2 sim docks - one is mini and the other is the next size up (small?). The small size has what looks like a sim card installed. What would this be used for? My mini sim does not fit in the small size dock.
Thanks

If your sim card is nano, then you can replace the existing nano sim card that comes with the hotspot. Basically swap out the nano part of the sim card with yours. You will ended up with micro sim card with your nano sim card in the middle.
