I just finished repainting every interior wall of my house with Sherwin Williams Emerald. I also read all those Reddit threads recommending Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Purchased it all during 40 & 50% off sales. Never used it before, previously only ever painted with various home depot and lowes purchases. If you put a little work into prepping your walls with a quick sanding, two coats of Emerald is silky smooth and looks fantastic. Use a good quality roller and brush. I used Purdy Marathon rollers. Take your time. My results are impressive and I'm super picky. I think i read that Sherwin just increased their base prices but i was able to get most of my paint right around $50 with coupons. I wouldn't pay the $90+ regular price because it goes on sale so frequently. Just buy the untinted paint during a sale if you don't know the exact color you want and you can bring it back and they'll tint it for free.

SW Duration is ~ $55/gal with coupon or ~$45/gal with a business account.

Many years ago, I bought paint from a big box store to paint my interior. I bought Glidden and swore to never use it again.

When it came time to repaint the interior of my current house, I used SW Duration. So easy to apply and looks fantastic.

I'm a cheap ass from way back but paint is one thing I never cheap out on anymore.

Even with 40% off you still end up with at least $50 a gallon. It is just overpriced in the first place for people who decide to paint themselves and do not really care about the price since painter is very expensive.

They have the emerald line going for them but like most paints, it over priced. be friends with someone and use their account. I get like 30-40% off of Dunn Edwards and 20% off Home Depot'a list price. I hear SW is strict though

The people complaining in here are nuts. This stuff (Emerald especially) is the greatest paint made and literally isn't in the same hemisphere as big box paint.

I would not say its the greatest paint for wall, but it does lay down pretty easily and touches up without being very noticeable. Does show scuff marks and some stains, for more durability there are various options in their hospitality or hospital lines which are much more durable and fully accepting of scrub cleaning. Most of those are catalyzed paints and more difficult to work with as a homeowner.

One comment you made needs to be highlighted; and that's putting a little work into preparing the surface.
I'm not a professional painter but with the right prep and quality paint, my results look professional

FWIW, Behr tops all of Consumer Reports' paint ratings. Sherwin is good but not the best, and especially for the normal price is overpriced for what you get.

If you're looking at wood stains, Sherwin is actually not good at all.

Yeah agreed. Honestly no matter what brand of paint you buy, take some time and prep your walls. For me that was patching up any holes, dents or uneven areas with drywall mud, then sand those areas smooth, then give the entire wall a quick sanding to knock down any imperfections from previous paint jobs. I'm no professional but i do a lot of research on Reddit and YouTube. I'm legitimately impressed with the results.

Also one last thing to note, the previous owners of my house must have been drunk while painting because they slopped paint all over the window and door trim, and did a horrible job of edging the ceiling. I had to replace all the trim moulding. Nothing screams amateur painter worse than that. Take your time, use a good brush (i used purdy clearcut elite and a wooster shortcut) and get a nice edge along your ceiling and trim. No need for tape or special tools in most places. Makes your paint job look so much more professional.

That does not make sense. You can look up the technical and material safety data sheets of all of these paints. Emerald shows much higher solids and pigments than their HGTV line. I also looked through many reddit threads, there is no clear consensus around what paint brand is best.

Which is all you need to know to suspect CR is getting kickbacks from those other paints. Emerald truly is a top 3 paint.

It sounds like Behr (Home Depot) and the SW stuff at Lowes are up there. One thing I've learned though is that everyone has different 'rankings' so it's pretty subjective. My general advice is that wherever you buy paint, buy the top or second to top priced stuff. Don't buy the base lines of paint regardless of what you're painting. I made that mistake when I painted my garage. I didn't care how it looked, all I wanted was a white wall, so I went bottom end combo 'paint and primer' Glidden. 3 coats later I could still see bare drywall through the paint and I just accepted it as good enough. Lesson learned, you will end up buying twice as much paint anyway and spending that much more time painting so any cost savings is a wash. I knew that going into it because I've heard it before but apparently I needed to experience it to learn my lesson laugh out loud

They do this promotion like once every quarter now.

I remodeled my whole house and bought a ton of paint. If you want the stuff to look good and last, you buy it here or benjamin Moore (which is even more expensive).

I didn't paint it myself but there is a reason all you see are contractors in the Sherwin-Williams store.
